Senior Solicitor - 6 month parental leave contractSenior Solicitor - fixed term contract to June 2026Managing Principal Solicitor - permanent roleSenior Solicitor About the roleThe Senior Solicitor's role incorporates commercial contracting, procurement, IP, and funding agreements.Provide authoritative advice that is clear, accurate and appropriate, on complex legal and policy issues and provide high level briefings and correspondence.Collaborate with departmental colleagues to deliver high quality client focused legal services in relation to complex and sensitive matters.Prepare briefs and instruct counsel and contracted solicitors in complex and sensitive matters.Procurement and coordination of workplace mediators in relation to certain disputes.Assist in monitoring and reporting on the performance and quality of advice of contracted legal firms.Lead and drive effective liaison with other government departments and agencies, and professional bodies.Advise on new and emerging issues in the law and their longer-term implications for the department.About youMinimum 18 months relevant experience.Commercial law experience highly valued, particularly advising on, drafting and negotiating contracts.Understanding of government law matters and experience in public sector would be an advantage but not essential.Experience in employment, industrial relations, intellectual property, or commercial litigation is helpful but not essential. Managing Principal Solicitor About the roleThis role operates autonomously within a distinct branch of this state government organisation.Provide authoritative advice that is clear, accurate and appropriate, on complex legal and policy issues and provide high level briefings and correspondence.Provide legal advice on a broad range of complex and significant regulatory and compliance issues including contractual matters, residential agreements, consumer law issues, property law issues, statutory interpretation and administrative law matters.Participate in strategic planning and contribute to strategic decision-making impacting on the operating environment of the department.Provide leadership, management, support and mentorship to the solicitors in the team and other solicitors across the branch.Allocate and supervise work where appropriate across lawyers and teams in consultation with relevant team managers.Contribute to legal knowledge within the department by a commitment to continuing legal education and leading delivery of training of departmental staff.Effectively manage and report on the performance of counsel and contracted solicitors and matter budgets in meeting the needs of the department in a cost-effective manner.Identify and advise on new and emerging issues in the law and their longer-term implications for the Department. Lead reviews of significant cases to identify improvements to systems and processes.About youMinimum 4 years experience.Experience in commercial, regulatory, or property law highly valued.Experience in drafting various forms of agreements (including consumer-facing agreements or documents) in a regulated legal environment would be highly desirable.Well-developed written communication and legal drafting skills are essential.Experience managing external law firms and counsel to deliver strategically appropriate advice on time and managing procurement processes.A broad understanding of government law and processes generally, corporate governance, litigation and the legislative process would be an advantage.Understanding of the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 (Vic) highly beneficial.Experience in construction law is helpful but this is not a major part of the role.Suited to a commercially minded and impact driven individual focused on delivering good outcomes.About the organisation:Our client is a large state government organisation with a strong mission to make Victoria fairer and safer for everyone.
