Reporting to the General Manager Legal, the Senior Lawyer is responsible for advising our customer and energy markets team (and other teams in the business) on our new trading and energy retail business, and on commodity sale and purchase agreements (for electricity, gas, renewable energy certificates and other products) with particular emphasis on offtake and transportation arrangements with respect to new and existing assets across the SQE portfolio.
The Role Provides strategic legal advice on the compliance and set up of our energy trading and retail business, including requirements with respect to the AFSL and energy retail licence.Legal advisor on all on-market and off-market (OTC) trading arrangements (including on the ISDA form) and on energy retail transactions and credit requirements.Legal lead negotiator on significant business contracts related to the bilateral sale and purchase (or trading) of electricity (or gas or renewable energy certificates) from our energy projects. Drafting and negotiation of power purchase agreements and access/connection agreements and LNG purchase, gas sales and transportation agreements.Advising and supporting bids and contract negotiations on Government energy transition schemes such as the capacity investment scheme and other government programmes.Provide support where needed to our renewable energy projects and our gas projects and terminal with respect to the development, delivery and operations of those projects.Providing practical and strategic commercial legal support across the Squadron Energy business based on a sound understanding of the business' goals and commercial drivers.Advising and presenting to senior management on matters requiring business approval.Skills and experience Essential 10+ years post-qualification experience in private practice or in-house in the energy sector.5+ years experience in an energy trading or energy retail business.Knowledge of electricity or gas regulatory frameworks.Tertiary qualifications in law with a current unrestricted practising certificate in Australia.Desirable – post-graduate qualifications in law or business.Required (1 or more of the following) Experience in the negotiation and drafting of ISDA electricity trading agreements or retail energy contracts.Experience drafting and negotiating LNG or gas sale and purchase agreements and gas transportation or tolling arrangements.What's on Offer In addition to a competitive remuneration package combined with attractive benefits, employees have the opportunity to access training and career development, and workplace flexibility.
