This role is open to all applicants, however applicants who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander that meet the minimum requirements for the role will be given priority consideration and invited to participate in the next selection activity.Your contribution:This position contributes to the delivery of the Cape York Peninsula Tenure Resolution Program (the Program) through undertaking and reporting on consultation with Aboriginal People and Torres Strait Islander People in relation to the transfer of land under the provisions of the Aboriginal Land Act 1991, Land Act 1994, Cape York Peninsula Heritage Act 2007, Nature Conservation Act 1992 and Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (the Acts). The role is responsible for establishment of tenures which align with negotiated outcomes with Traditional Owners and which are achievable through application of the Acts.Key will be the provision of support and specialist advice in relation to land management and use and finding innovative solutions to progress complex land tenure dealings under the Acts, including native title considerations.The position will also be required to contribute to the development and improvement of legislation, policy and procedures that recognises emerging trends and practices in land management.Travel statement :• This position in based in Cairns, but may require travel to other locations from time to time, including overnight stays.Your role:As the Senior Land Officer you will:• Facilitate, negotiate, mediate and report on consultation with Aboriginal people regarding land transfer processes, and prepare related reports and correspondence relevant to the work of the Program.• Professionally represent the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation and provide expert native title and tenure advice to clients through interpretation of the Acts, related departmental policies, practices and processes.• Liaise and develop an effective network with Indigenous and non-Indigenous clients including land councils, government and non-government agencies, and local authorities on land related matters pertaining to the provisions of the Acts.• Provide culturally appropriate advice and solutions about land transfer processes and the management of Indigenous landowning entities established during the land transfer process.• Provide authoritative specialist advice to the Director, Cape York Peninsula Tenure Resolution Program and senior management of the Department and other government departments on matters relevant to the operation of the Program; and develop and implement work procedures in accordance with changes to the Acts.• Co-ordinate and prioritise projects to ensure successful outcomes are achieved in a timely, appropriate and efficient manner, including the activities of subordinate staff and activities associated with the transfer of land.• Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
