IntroductionThe BBC News website is one of the world's largest and most popular news sites, with mobile and desktop editions for the UK and International audiences, as well as US and Asia editions, plus UK-facing and International-facing apps.
We are expanding our digital news operation in Sydney recruiting digital journalists to cover international and UK news in text and video. This operation will perform a crucial role in building the global audiences coming to the BBC as well as setting up our digital coverage to best serve and help grow the early morning UK audience coming to the site.
The team will take over coverage from digital output teams in the UK and US to drive the biggest global stories as they happen and set up our UK morning offer seven days a week. It will work closely with teams in London, Washington DC and Singapore and alongside a small team of journalists already based in Sydney covering Australian news.
The team will be expected to run live pages on the biggest moving stories, produce news stories and sharp angles in text and video, curate different editions of the website and the BBC News app and work with BBC correspondents and reporters around the world to bring our reporting to millions of people.
Main ResponsibilitiesSenior Journalists for the BBC's Digital Output team based in Sydney will play a key role providing coverage of UK and international stories, picking up coverage from London and the US and handing back to early morning editors based in the UK.
You will be expected to assess the most important stories of the day to cover, write and edit accurate, pithy news stories and commission or even produce timely digital video - with flair and context. You will have a love of news, sharp reporting skills and a thoughtful approach to how we tell a story.
The work this team does faces global and UK audiences. The team will cover the biggest breaking global stories and ensure UK audiences wake up to the strongest offer on our digital platforms.
Tasks will range from jumping on breaking news to run live pages, writing or editing the definitive news lead, chasing and developing story angles and producing or commissioning video clips that set the news in context. We want journalists to be able to monitor social media, search trends and audience data to help us build new audiences. You will also be expected to curate the front pages of the various editions of the website and the apps.
The team needs people who are enthusiastic about breaking news, well versed with the UK and global news agenda, and who have a good understanding of the best way to tell stories for digital audiences.
