Introduction The BBC News website is one of the world's largest and most popular news sites, with mobile and desktop editions for the UK and International audiences, as well as US and Asia editions, plus UK-facing and International-facing apps.
We are expanding our digital news operation in Sydney recruiting digital journalists to cover international and UK news in text and video.
This operation will perform a crucial role in building the global audiences coming to the BBC as well as setting up our digital coverage to best serve and help grow the early morning UK audience coming to the site.
The team will take over coverage from digital output teams in the UK and US - to drive the biggest global stories as they happen and set up our UK morning offer seven days a week.
It will work closely with teams working in London, Washington DC and Singapore and work alongside a small team of journalists already based in Sydney covering Australian news.
The team will be expected to run live pages on the biggest moving stories, produce news stories and sharp angles in text and video, curate different editions of the website and the BBC News app and work with BBC correspondents and reporters around the world to bring our reporting to millions of people.
Interviews for the role are expected to take place in the week of 20th January.
Main Responsibilities The Senior Journalist for Growth will be embedded in the BBC's digital news operation out of Sydney, which will provide digital coverage of the biggest UK and international stories picking up from teams in London and the US and handing back to early morning editors based in the UK.
This operation will perform a crucial role in building the global audiences coming to the BBC in those hours as well as setting up our digital coverage to best serve and help grow the early morning UK audience coming to the site.
As such, this new role will work closely with growth specialists and digital journalists in the UK, Singapore, Washington and elsewhere.
Based in a fast-paced newsroom, the Senior Journalist for Growth will develop and support audience growth strategies as we aim to build audiences globally and in the UK.
It will provide strategic advice as well as data-informed real-time audience insights to help teams with editorial decision-making to maximise reach and engagement on and off platform.
It will also have ideas on how to acquire new audiences and deepen engagement.
The right candidate will attend daily news meetings with a strong news sense and an audience-first mindset.
They will be expected to provide daily hands-on support and actionable advice on what stories to cover and how, optimisation tips for journalists at all stages of content production and publication as well as performance analysis.
Critically, they will also understand the importance of the BBC's editorial values and how to drive the kind of growth that builds on these values in the digital landscape.

A proven track record of successfully implementing tactics to grow audiences Demonstrable experience of improving online visibility in search for our biggest news stories as well as our evergreen offers, including SEO advice and best practice on social for reaching new audiences An awareness of audience and platform trends and experience of undertaking analysis to help us develop new audience acquisition approaches Experience in newsrooms and an understanding of editorial workflows, content production, formats and juggling different priorities while working to tight deadlines High level of numeracy and proficiency in data analysis with experience of online analytics, tools and dashboards such as Chartbeat, Newswhip and Google Trends, Google Analytics, Similarweb, Semrush Strong editorial judgment and experience of providing real-time insights for journalists and the ability to translate data into editorial action Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present to and train journalists and foster a responsible data-informed culture of growth and audience insight About the BBC We don't focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it.
