What we offer Salary packaging options up to $18,450 per annum tax freeRemote allowance of $3,300 per annum (if applicable)Annual airfare allowance6 weeks annual leave3 weeks personal leaveAbout the role Seeking a skilled and committed Intermediate/Senior Solicitor to join our criminal law team in Katherine.
In this role, you will represent Aboriginal people in criminal duty matters and casework, including pleas, hearings, and committals in the Local Court, as well as indictable matters in the Supreme Court.
You will work collaboratively with other staff to address the disadvantages faced by Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system, with a strong focus on providing culturally appropriate legal services.
Key responsibilities Provide high-quality, culturally relevant legal advice and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients charged with criminal offences.Collaborate with other staff to help overcome the systemic disadvantages faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.Represent clients in the Local Court for various criminal matters, including bail applications, direction hearings, pleas, hearings, committals, and matters in the Supreme Court.Demonstrate a high level of cultural awareness and sensitivity in your legal practice, ensuring all interactions are respectful and culturally appropriate.Travel to and work in remote communities, including circuit (bush) courts, with overnight stays as required.Assist with mentoring and supporting the professional development of junior lawyers and paralegals.Proactively identify issues contributing to the disadvantage of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system and respond to these issues through legal education, law reform, and community development initiatives.Actively participate in all team and staff meetings and work cooperatively with admin and client service teams to achieve the best outcomes for clients.Selection criteria Admission (or eligibility for admission) as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory.A deep understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, particularly their disproportionate involvement in the criminal justice system.
Sensitivity to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture, and needs.Demonstrated experience in Local and/or Supreme Courts, with the ability to provide high-quality oral and written legal advice across a range of criminal law matters.Excellent communication skills, with a particular ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal clients and communities.Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage a high volume of work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.Ability and willingness to travel to and work in remote and regional areas as required by the role.Competency in using computers, email, and electronic scheduling, and the ability to prepare reports and correspondence.Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team and seek guidance on cultural issues as necessary.Requirements Ability to obtain a satisfactory "Working with Children Clearance" (Ochre Card) upon commencement.Satisfactory criminal history check and no history of disqualification from employment by a legal practice.Ability and willingness to travel to remote areas.How to apply Applicants for this position must submit a cover letter and resume addressing the essential criteria.
