About the role The Queensland Law Society has a full-time 12 month contract role for a Senior In-house Legal Counsel in the Office of General Counsel. The main purpose of the General Counsel division is to provide independent legal advice to the Chief Executive Officer, the President, the Council and its committees, the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board (the Board), the Society's incorporated legal practice and the Society's officers.
Key responsibilities of the role are: Providing independent in-house legal advice.Conducting litigation on behalf of the Society and representing the Society before the Queensland courts and tribunals, including, responding to QCAT applications for stay and/or review of an administrative decision, applying for and responding to injunctions, responding to legally compelled requests for information and conducting matters involving personal bankruptcy and corporate insolvency.Managing the Society's exposure to risk by reviewing, negotiating and advising on contracts and commercial activities.Processing applications for access to information.Preparing submissions to government and other relevant entities seeking legislative change.To be successful for the role you will have the following: Qualifications A bachelor's degree in law, admission as an Australian lawyer and eligibility to hold an unrestricted Queensland practising certificate.Knowledge, skills and experience A minimum of 7+ years PAE, with ideally 4 years' experience in private practice corporate/commercial litigation.Prior in-house experience and administrative litigation experience highly regarded.Strong critical and strategic legal analysis and research skills with demonstrated ability to produce practical solutions to complex issues.Knowledge of government structures and processes.By joining QLS you will assist to build a society that genuinely cares about its members, people and Queensland law.
