The Integrated Geological Mapping Section provides precompetitive national geological data in support of the responsible development of a diverse resources sector in Australia. Our data supports exploration for groundwater, minerals, and energy and is integral to work within the Minerals, Energy and Groundwater Division such as precompetitive mineral potential assessments, critical minerals studies, and regional drilling programs.The work of the Integrated Geological Mapping Section will be integral to the Resourcing Australia's Prospectivity initiative, a recently announced, multi-decadal investment in pre-competitive geoscience by the Commonwealth Government. Resourcing Australia's Prosperity will, over 35 years, at a national scale and through deep dives, progressively map Australia's highly prospective regions, critical minerals, groundwater, and resources needed for the transition to net zero.The roleThis role is a senior science role in the Australian Public Service that will provide authoritative and technical advice from the deposit to the global scale and promote the responsible development of Australia's natural resources. A major focus of this role will be to better map and understand the systems that lead to the discovery of minerals needed for clean energy to help Australia achieve net zero emissions. Your work will help secure more value from our resources and support a thriving domestic manufacturing sector. Our work supports Australian Government initiatives with the aim of stimulating mineral exploration investment, including critical minerals, to open new producing provinces with mineral endowments.In this role you will:Have a scientific leadership role in securing Australia's future resource needs and the transition to net zero emissions, with a focus on Australian critical and strategic minerals and their importance to the wider community and whole of government agenda.Provide strategic technical leadership and drive innovation in geological mapping, geochemistry, and mineral systems supporting the strategic direction of Geoscience Australia and the Australian Government's priorities.Build strong, strategic, and collaborative relationships with stakeholders in government, industry, and academia, nationally and internationally.Work collaboratively, leading the scientific direction of a multi-disciplinary team to integrate a range of geoscientific information to inform mineral understanding for critical minerals at regional to national scale.Contribute expertise to building staff capability, including promoting Geoscience Australia work to increase adoption of innovation by external stakeholders.To be successful in the role you will:Provide high-level scientific leadership in predictive geological mapping using specialist methodologies, including most of the following: integrated surface and subsurface modelling using machine learning, geostatistical modelling, data mining, remote sensing and integrated geomorphological, regolith and geological interpretation, in support of geological and resource potential studies and national scale mapping.Drive the development and deliver fit-for-purpose national-scale precompetitive data and predictive mapping products and tools to support resource potential mapping, exploration, and discovery of new critical and strategic mineral resources.Build and sustain long-term relationships and liaise with a range of stakeholders, including across industry, Government, and the science community.Provide a vision for the role of precompetitive geoscience in tackling societal challenges and the transition to net zero emissions and how these activities fit into the organisation, wider community, and whole of government agenda.Mentor and provide expert scientific expertise to support building staff capability in artificial intelligence, e.g. machine learning.Have highly developed written and oral communication skills, and ability to clearly convey key points and explain complex information to a range of technical and non-technical audiences, and experience preparing technical reports, papers, and other written communication to meet peer-review standards.Demonstrate a commitment to building a positive and inclusive culture.Adhere to the APS Values and Code of Conduct and consistently behave in an honest, ethical, and professional way.Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualificationsA proven track record in computing geoscience, in the field of geochemistry and/or geological mapping applied to understanding national scale mineral systems.An ability to build collaborations and contribute effectively to professional and technically focused multi-disciplinary teams.Demonstrated science excellence, with a history of innovation and impact.Are you unsure about applying?Did you know that a Hewlett Packard internal report found that men apply for jobs when they meet an average of 60 percent of the job requirements?
