Senior Fisheries Policy and Strategy Officer - 14 Months Contract Skip to content Are you passionate about protecting and promoting the future of WA's commercial fishing industries? The Western Australian Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC) is the peak industry body, and we are seeking a dedicated and driven industry advocate to join our team to fill a 14-months maternity leave position.
You will play a vital role in shaping the industry's future to ensure the sustainability of our marine resources.
Position We are seeking a Senior Fisheries Policy and Strategy officer to join our team.
The individual is responsible for making a valuable contribution to the advancement of the WA fishing industry through professional analysis and advice as it relates to relevant fisheries legislation, regulations, changes in government policy, impacts of competing interests in the sector.
Reporting directly to the CEO and working collaboratively with a skilled team, this senior position requires applicants with relevant experience in fisheries and fisheries management, ideally in Western Australia.

If you're a dedicated professional with a passion for the fishing industry, we can't wait to hear from you! Responsibilities Offer clear and accurate advice on legislation, regulations, compensation mechanisms and accumulative impacts they apply to Western Australian fisheries.
Contribute to evidence-based policy development.
Create Key Documents: Develop important briefs, reports, submissions and presentations that drive our mission forward.
Develop robust professional relationships with all stakeholders and Members to assist in achieving positive outcomes for the WA fishing industry.
Be the key point of contact for key WA Fisheries, identifying and prioritising key issue impacting the sector, seeking to unify the voice of the fishery and working with the sector to address resource access issues. Fisheries Expertise: Demonstrated knowledge of fisheries management, legislation, and processes. Policy Analysis: Proven ability to analyse complex policy issues and provide strategic recommendations.
Stakeholder Engagement: Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with industry stakeholders, government agencies, and other relevant parties. Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey information and influence stakeholders.
Decision-Making: Ability to make informed decisions and provide strategic recommendations.
Analytical Thinking: Proven ability to analyse data, identify trends, and assess the potential impacts of policy changes. Project Management: Experience managing projects and coordinating the work of teams. Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
Policy Development: Experience in developing and implementing fisheries policies and regulations.
Research Skills: Ability to conduct research and gather relevant data to inform policy decisions.
Negotiation Skills: Experience negotiating with stakeholders to reach agreements on complex issues.
Qualification Tertiary qualification in fisheries management, marine science, or demonstrated equivalent.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in fisheries management or a similar role.
