The key duties of the position include: Our Opportunity Do you want the opportunity to shape and lead a new Branch committed to supporting community justice initiatives that Close the Gap for First Nations peoples? Do you have strong cultural competency and a thirst to make a difference? Then this position is for you! Justice reinvestment is a long-term, community-led approach that aims to prevent crime, address the drivers of contact with the justice system, and improve justice outcomes for First Nations peoples in a particular place or community.
An interim Justice Reinvestment Unit is to be established in the Attorney-General's Department to support communities funded under the justice reinvestment programs to successfully implement their initiatives.
The Interim Justice Reinvestment Unit will also lead the development of a justice reinvestment measurement and evaluation framework, and the design of the final Justice Reinvestment Unit working in-line with the Priority Reforms and in partnership with key First Nations and State and Territory Government stakeholders.
The successful candidate will lead a small Branch to deliver these objectives.
The head of the interim Unit will represent the Unit in key external and internal forums, including the Justice Policy Partnership.
You will be responsible for the strategic direction, corporate management and the development and implementation of a forward work plan.
You will lead the transition of the Unit to its final structure in a planned and strategic way that values the voice of Community and ensures continuity of support to funded communities, and be responsible for change management throughout the transition period.
Roles in the interim Unit will be on a 12-month temporary basis with the potential for extension or transition into the final Unit once established.
This role will involve some travel, including to remote locations.
How you can help us make a difference We are looking for an innovative leader who is willing to work differently and support the interim Unit to work in line with the Priority Reforms under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.
We are seeking an individual who approaches complex problems with resilience, empathy and collaboration, excels at change management, is experienced with leading teams through transition periods, and is able to shape the culture and ways of working for this newly created team.
This position is an identified position.
Applicants for this position must demonstrate: an understanding of the issues affecting First Nations peoples an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with First Nations peoples.
While First Nations candidates are strongly encouraged to apply, these opportunities are open to all.
Ideal candidates will have: highly developed cultural competency and an understanding of the issues affecting First Nations peoples an understanding of, or experience with, community-led place-based approaches; specific Justice Reinvestment experience is desirable but not essential experience working with the Coalition of Peaks, community-controlled organisations and Commonwealth and State and Territory Governments Ideal candidates will also be able to demonstrate a history of acting in accordance with the charter of leadership behaviours (DRIVE), including through: experience delivering change management and an ability to take responsibility for the smooth and appropriate delivery of key policy outcomes exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build collaborative relationships in a culturally diverse environment and use networks to achieve outcomes strong initiative, a solutions-focused approach and an ability to demonstrate innovation and agility and provide quality and timely advice leading with integrity, displaying accountability and promoting open and honest communication a strong sense of self-awareness, an ability to foster respect and inclusion and a demonstrated history of empowering staff through promoting cultural and psychosocially safe work environments.
