The Role As a Senior Executive Lawyer at the Department of Education, you will lead a Branch of over 20 lawyers who provide legal services to the Schools and Higher Education, Research and International (HERI) Groups and specialist commercial law services to the department, as well as deliver the legislation program for the portfolio. You will also assist the General Counsel with the leadership of Legal and provide personal expert legal advice on matters of particular importance to the department.
You will have the opportunity to work in partnership with our departmental clients on high profile projects of national importance. Our department has responsibility for some of the largest and most interesting legislative based programs in Australia, involving complex legislation, high value grants and commercial arrangements, and intergovernmental negotiations. Our lawyers work closely with their clients in the development and implementation of programs and policies and help them with legislation development, compliance, disputes (including tribunal advocacy work) and problem solving.
Duties and Responsibilities In this role, you will be responsible for the following:
providing expert, timely, easy to understand and risk-aware legal services;
delivery of the portfolio legislation program;
delivering the higher education 'special circumstances' litigation outcomes that promote the interests of the department;
leading teams in the delivery of high-quality legal services, which are timely, accurate, clear and solutions focussed;
working collaboratively with the General Counsel and Principal Government Lawyers as a key member of Legal's leadership team, promoting the strategic direction and demonstrating the core values of the legal area, the department and the APS, and contributing to the management of the legal area (including in relation to practice management and staff development, attraction and retention);
developing and maintaining effective and collaborative relationships with colleagues (both in legal and line areas) and external stakeholders.
Qualifications and Education To be eligible for this position applicants must have admission as a legal practitioner in an Australian Court and hold a Government lawyer Unrestricted Practising Certificate.
