PD – Senior Environmental Planner - February 2024
PurposeThe Senior Environmental Planner is responsible for facilitating the development, implementation and review of key environmental policies, services and directions across the organisation and ensuring integration through Council's strategic management framework.This includes providing expert advice to senior and executive management and council members in responding to new external trends and directions along with developing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.The officer works closely with the Unit Manager Environmental Sustainability and as a senior member of the Environmental Sustainability team, which has a focus on accelerating improvements to environmental planning, engagement and performance across the organisation and in the community.Key Outcomes
• Provide leadership and proactive advice across the organisation, to executive management and council members on the planning, delivery, reporting and evaluation of environmental initiatives.
• Research and identify local and global environmental sustainability trends, indicators, and measures, and communicate priorities to support organisational decision making.
• Develop high level policies and plans that ensure integration of environmental priorities in council's strategic management framework.
• Provide strategic internal advice and develop external written responses to local, state and federal environmental policy.
• Develop business cases for new initiatives, source funding and prepare grant applications.
• Develop strategic regional partnerships with external stakeholders, including other councils, the LGA (Local Government Association), state government agencies, research institutions and the community on current environmental priorities.
• Manage pilot projects and targeted initiatives that deepen organisational understanding of environmental sustainability priorities.
• Support and mentor other members of the Environmental Sustainability team.• Comply with work, health and safety policies and procedures.• Embrace ethical and moral behavior and report any suspected instances of fraud
and/or corruption in accordance with Fraud and Corruption Management and the Code of Conduct.
Person Specification• Passion for urban environmental sustainability and nature.• Confidence in working within an environment of complexity and uncertainty using
strategic and creative thinking to provide clear advice.• Political awareness and understanding suitable for the local government context.

• Australian residency.• Tertiary qualification to degree level in a discipline covering environmental policy and Desired Requirements• A minimum of 10 years relevant work experience.• Experience working with local government systems and processes in an
environmental sustainability context.• Knowledge of the South Australian environmental policy and planning context.• Existing relationships with key relevant environmental agencies and practitioners in
South Australia.• Knowledge of the local environment and community within the City of Marion.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience• Advanced knowledge of environmental policy, legislation, and sciences.• Contemporary knowledge and understanding of carbon accounting, climate change
adaptation planning and climate risk management.• Experience working with and developing corporate environmental governance and
reporting frameworks.• Working with senior staff and elected representatives to embed environmental
priorities into organisational culture and strategic management frameworks.• Research, analysis and reporting on environmental trends, indicators, and needs.• High-level written and oral communication skills including the ability to convey
complex ideas with clarity and simplicity to executive leaders and elected decision makers.
• Planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and reviewing environmental policies and projects.
• Identifying future business needs and developing business cases and grant applications.

• Developing corporate responses to strategic and political environmental issues.• Delivering public participation and stakeholder engagement initiatives.• Project management, budgeting, and financial management.• Proven competence in use of technology including willingness to learn new systems.
Standard conditions
• Satisfactory completion of a National Police Clearance (will be arranged by the City of Marion)
• Satisfactory completion of applicable Medical Assessment (will be arranged by the City of Marion)
• Must be either an Australian resident or possess the legal right to work in Australia, with the ability to provide documentation of a valid work visa.
• Comply with existing Work, Health and Safety legislation and regulation obligations and apply "Think Safe Live Well" philosophy.
• Embrace ethical and moral behavior and report any suspected instances of fraud and/or corruption in accordance with Fraud and Corruption Management and the Code of Conduct.
• The incumbent will perform other duties as required.
Other conditions specific to the role• Current Driver's License• Some out of hours work including weekends and evenings will be required.• Occasional attendance at council meetings (out of hours).
