Gamuda Australia was awarded a major road transport project by the NSW Government to deliver the Black Hill to Tomago Package of works for the M1 Motorway Extension to Raymond Terrace. The design and construct contract will be delivered through a 60-40 joint venture with John Holland.The scope of works includes a 10km greenfield dual carriageway motorway link between the M1 Motorway at Beresfield and Tomago, including the construction of nine bridges, with a Viaduct approximately 2.6km-long across the Hunter River and floodplain.Role and Responsibilities:This role provides a unique opportunity for a Senior Environmental Advisor to provide Parental Leave coverage on our M1 South – Black Hill to Tomago Project, then transitioning to support our broader business activities in the Hunter Region. Initially, you will be based on-site in Tarro, approximately 30 minutes from the Newcastle CBD, and report to the M1 South Environment and Sustainability Manager. You will support Project delivery through the development and implementation of our environmental management systems, providing guidance on complex issues in relation to on-site environmental management. You will work with the project delivery team to ensure adherence to environmental legislation, regulations, and contractual obligations.Duties and Responsibilities:Provide ongoing environmental management guidance to operational teams, ensuring compliance with legal and organisational standards.Oversee marine works within Hunter River including management of water quality, ERSED controls, rock causeway, barges, and piling works.Oversee general road construction management including ERSED, acid sulphate soils, water, noise, and air quality.Implement contamination and unexpected finds procedures.Coordinate the acquisition and maintenance of necessary environmental permits, ensuring they are current and compliant.Participate in environmental meetings to discuss compliance status and environmental issues.Participate in and conduct regular site inspections to identify potential environmental risks and compliance issues.Personal Qualities:Strong written and verbal communication with the ability to tailor language to suit the target audience and clearly articulate ideas on complex issues.Builds strong working relationships with the team, the Client, and key stakeholders.Ability to engage, influence, and appropriately challenge stakeholders across a broad range of business functions.Actively promotes innovation and seeks to learn from experiences of self and others to find better ways of doing things.Problem-solving mentality – approaching challenges with creativity, critical thinking, and a solutions-oriented mindset.Duration:6-month Parental Leave coverage on M1 South – Black Hill to Tomago Project.Pre-contracts role based in NSW with the opportunity to move into a permanent role in the Hunter region or relocate within Gamuda's operations.Qualifications and Experience required:Bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, or a related field.Minimum of 7 years' experience in environmental management in a similar role within the construction, engineering, or infrastructure sectors.Proven track record of managing environmental compliance and approvals on large-scale infrastructure projects.Familiarity with Transport for New South Wales Specification G36.Gamuda encourages and supports a diverse and inclusive workforce, including those from overseas, current Visa holders, and candidates from outside the construction and engineering sector.If you have good leadership qualities and people management skills, are able to work independently, self-motivated, and a team player, then we would like to hear from you.
