About the Role

Reporting to executive leadership, the Senior Director will lead the management, execution, and enhancement of investments through their life cycle. The Senior Director plays a critical role in executing investment strategies and fostering portfolio companies to achieve meaningful economic growth and impact, contributing to the success of the Victorian economy. This role covers a broad range of sectors, including Advanced Manufacturing, Agri-food, Clean Economy, Digital Technologies, and Health & Life Sciences, overseeing investments at various sizes and stages, from early-stage ventures to scaling and growth opportunities, ensuring alignment with the organisation's impact-driven objectives.

The Senior Director will collaborate with peers, portfolio construction teams, sector specialists, and other subject matter experts to identify strategic opportunities, leading projects and deal teams through the end-to-end transaction process.

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee the management and execution of strategically aligned investment opportunities, providing insights to the Executive Committees while identifying early-stage investments with market traction.Play a pivotal role in attracting opportunities that align with Breakthrough Victoria's investment strategy.Collaborate with Portfolio Construction to manage investments in line with the investment mandate, including follow-on investments and exits.Work with internal teams to identify high-impact opportunities.Support Asset Management and Impact teams in monitoring portfolio companies against milestones and targets.Represent Breakthrough Victoria as a Nominee Director or Observer on Investee Company Boards, ensuring good governance and supporting strategic objectives.Build and maintain relationships with investors, partners, and external service providers, fostering strategic partnerships to progress investment opportunities.Provide timely investment reporting to the CIO and Board, offering updates on progress, risks, and mitigants.Lead and inspire deal teams, strengthening investment capabilities and supporting the development of the team through active listening and feedback.

Key Requirements:Deep expertise in investment execution, including initial investments, follow-ons, and exits, with strong knowledge of deal structuring, financial modelling, and portfolio construction.Significant experience in venture capital, private equity, or related fields, with a proven ability to identify and execute high-impact investment opportunities.Strong analytical skills with advanced financial modelling capabilities, along with resilience in managing ambiguity and complex scenarios.Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to present data-backed proposals to diverse audiences.Proven experience building trusted relationships with founders, advisors, and industry experts, along with the ability to confidently act as a representative on portfolio company boards.Demonstrated leadership abilities, guiding teams through complex situations with confidence and empathy.At least 8 years of relevant investment experience, with exposure to early-stage investments being advantageous.A bachelor's or master's degree in business, finance, engineering, science, or a related field is preferred.
