Details: The Office of the Commissioner for ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People (the Office) will undertake individual and systemic advocacy and monitoring in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in the child protection system as well as other areas where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their families are disproportionately represented.
The Office advises and influences government on a broad spectrum of issues that impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children across both government and non-government services including for example, education, justice, health, housing, child protection and provides independent advice on issues of culture and equity. The Office of The Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People is committed to ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children are restored and remain with their families and communities. We continue to act on the ethics and practice of Do No Harm and best practice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People. The office also has the specific ability to engage as a party to case conferences and provide alternative pathways to resolution other than court ordered processes.
The Senior Case Manager is an integral part of the Office who will work closely with staff to undertake a broad range of duties to assist the Office in achieving its objective in making it accessible for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children & young people, and their families to seek both justice and accountability for their Children & Young People.
The Senior Case Manager is focused on delivering the best possible life outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children & young people and families through responsive client service underpinned by best practice trauma informed case management, advocacy and accountability oversight including, but not limited to CYPS, Health, Policing and The Criminal Justice System.
Eligibility/Other requirements: This is a designated position in accordance with s42, Discrimination Act 1991 and is only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage is considered essential and therefore a Confirmation of Aboriginality may be requested.Relevant tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Psychology, Social Welfare, Law, Social Science, or related discipline will be highly regarded. Please note: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who do not have these qualifications but who have appropriate and relevant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage and experience are eligible to apply.Two (2) years of experience working with children, young people and their families or carers in a social work/case management role, and/or experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities on the in a frontline setting.Willingness to undertake professional development training and updated wellbeing education.Background/ security clearance checks may be conducted.This position does not require a pre-employment medical check.Islander heritage is considered essential and therefore a Confirmation of Aboriginality may be requested.Notes: A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months.
