About the agency and
Primary objective
Implement environmental impact assessment of development proposals in accordance with the Environment Protection Act 2019 (EP Act) and Environment Protection Regulations 2020. Investigate, develop and implement environmental protection policies, guidance and strategies related to such development.
Key duties and responsibilities
Identify, critically analyse and assess risks and potential environmental impacts associated with development proposals and make recommendations on the level of environmental assessment, environmental protection safeguards and standards that should be incorporated in conditions of approval consistent with best practice environmental management. Provide high quality, efficient and timely environmental and scientific advice to the NT EPA, government, industry and the public on development matters that come under the responsibility of the Environmental Assessment Unit. Liaise with NT government agencies and development proponents to provide clear statutory advice on current assessments and ensure that advice and recommendations for environmental protection are accurately translated into conditions of approval for development proposals. Prepare well written briefings and reports within required timeframes, including drafting conditions of approval for development proposals based on advice and recommendations for environmental approval. Represent the Environment Division and the NT EPA by interacting and liaising effectively with proponents, government agencies, industry and consultants about development proposals and the environmental impact assessment process. Prepare documents to support implementation of environmental impact assessment processes including guidance, procedures and policies. Mentor and support staff when required. Selection criteria
Essential
Tertiary qualifications in environmental science or related field, from a recognised academic institution. Experience in environmental impact assessment, natural resources management or environmental management. Well-developed oral and written communication skills, including proven ability to distil and communicate complex issues to a wide range of stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects to deliver required outputs in short timeframes, with minimum supervision. Demonstrated negotiation and problem solving skills, initiative, flexibility and ability to effectively manage conflict. Well-developed research, investigative and analytical abilities to interpret technical and complex information and prepare professional reports, policies, strategies and guidance material. Desirable
Knowledge of legislation related to environment protection or environmental impact assessment. Technical experience in the assessment of impacts on the biophysical (water quality, air quality, ecosystems), social and/or cultural aspects of the environment, including knowledge of applying regulatory standards.
