In addition, the advocate will play a key role in working with the Senior Director and Commissioner on systemic advocacy for important reforms to laws, policies, and practices to enhance the wellbeing, safety, and cultural rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.The position will be part of a small team, working collaboratively across key areas of policy and practice across the Commission. The Senior Advocate will be responsible for ensuring they are up to date on matters impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.The Senior Advocate is an integral part of the office who will work closely with staff to undertake a broad range of duties to assist the Office in achieving its objective in making it accessible for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children & young people, and their families.The focus of this role will be on delivering the best possible outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children & young people and their families through responsive client services underpinned by best practice, including trauma-informed practice, doing no harm, and ensuring that the Commissioner is briefed on matters impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.The advocate will play a crucial role in identifying gaps and issues that exist in practice and will inform policies and initiatives with the commissioner and director.We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where people with diverse thoughts, lived experience, and perspectives can thrive and contribute their unique talents to the ACTPS and ACT community. We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disabilities, people with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, veterans, younger and older workers, and people with diverse genders, sexes, and sexualities to apply.Eligibility/Other Requirements:Tertiary qualification in law, social work, community development, or equivalent qualification is highly desirable.A minimum of three years' professional experience in a relevant field such as advocacy, support community development, and/or Indigenous affairs is highly desirable.Demonstrated awareness of matters impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people, including in the areas of youth justice, child protection, education, and health.Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required. This is an Identified position for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
