Who we are The Work Health and Safety (WHS) National Operations section is responsible for the implementation of WHS systems, strategy and standards across all groups and divisions. The operational team are the 'boots on the ground' who play a pivotal role in enabling the department to have a unified approach to implementing WHS systems and processes. This is through providing contemporary safety advice and guidance to support front-line workers and managers.
The Jobs The Senior Advisor - WHS National Operations shall provide timely advice on WHS matters, conduct and/or facilitate risk assessments, coach operations teams on how to identify and respond to hazards and incidents, conduct workplace inspections and audits, respond to incidents and WHS matters as they arise, attend work group meetings and perform planned work activities as allocated by the Assistant Director - WHS National Operations. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Actively building WHS leadership and capability within the business and embed WHS functions and activities into daily work to promote positive WHS performanceUpskilling our people on WHS matters, such as identifying, assessing, and controlling risks (both physical and psychosocial) and building understanding of the importance of proactive incident and hazard reportingLeading the development and implementation of a site-specific WHS approach that aligns to the department's WHS strategies, WHS risk profile and related assurance activitiesPromoting increased understanding, awareness, and use of the department's WHS software systems through training, coaching and supportActing as a key point of contact for people in place location on WHS related matters, providing contemporary advice and support aligned to WHS policy and relevant legislative guidelinesDriving the implementation and review of site-specific and/or branch specific risk controls and registers, ensuring that critical risks are documented, and appropriate controls are identified and implementedFacilitating the development and review of WHS risk assessmentsLeading WHS audit activities as per developed assurance guidelines and processesFacilitating incident investigations, while providing support and advice to staff in accordance with the department's WHS policies, procedures, and relevant WHS legislative guidelinesAdvocating for the strategic goals of the broader WHS section, supporting the implementation of new WHS initiatives, programs, and systems, contributing to planning and identifying opportunities for continuous improvementProviding professional, technical and policy advice in relation to complex WHS problems and assist in strategic planning, program and project management and policy developmentAnalysing WHS data and research information and making recommendations to support stakeholders as requiredActively supporting the WHS section mission, objectives, and commitments, as per the WHS charter, and ensure high quality service delivery to the departmentUndertaking ad-hoc tasks and duties at the direction of your WHS Assistant Director.Please note that the merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.
What we are looking for Knowledge and experience Contemporary and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Work Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Codes of Practice, and relevant Australian and International Standards, and their application in a Commonwealth Government work environment.Competent in the application of risk management practices and WHS incident investigation methodologies.Clear understanding and demonstrated implementation of the concept of foreseeability and reasonable practicality in the delivery of risk management advice and practices to key stakeholders.Demonstrated ability to work with a geographically dispersed workforce with a complex and varied risk profile.A minimum of five years' experience working in a similar WHS role.Mandatory qualifications Certificate IV in WHS (BSB42012/BSB41415)/OHS (BSB41407/BSB41604) or equivalent relevant to the position.
