The Department of the Senate is seeking applications from those interested in joining the Black Rod's Office in the role of Senate Attendant on a casual basis.
During Senate sitting periods, Senate Estimates hearings, and other ceremonial events, the Senate Attendant provides support services in the Senate chamber and Senate committee rooms for the President, senators, and the Clerks at the Table. Their duties include setting up the Senate chamber on sitting days, setting up Senate committee rooms on estimates days, delivering and distributing parliamentary papers, providing messenger support to senators in the Senate chamber, and performing ceremonial duties when the Senate is in operation. The occupant of this position also provides messenger services outside the Senate chamber, generally for the Clerk Assistant (Procedure).
The Senate Attendant performs their duties in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols, to a high standard and in a timely and professional manner.
The key duties of the position include: Provide services and administrative support to the President of the Senate, senators, the Clerks at the Table, the Clerk Assistant (Procedure), and other employees including:setting up and tidying the Senate chamber on sitting dayssetting up and tidying the Senate committee rooms on Senate estimates daysdelivering and distributing parliamentary papersmessenger dutiesrecordkeepingimplementing the rules relating to access to the Senate chamber and Senate committee rooms and working in conjunction with the Parliamentary Security Service, as directed by the Usher of the Black Rodadministrative and messenger support to senators and employees during Senate estimates hearings.Provide support for ceremonial events and occasions in the Senate and the Parliamentary precincts and provide general assistance to visitors to Parliament House.Carry out administrative tasks associated with the position.Assist the Senators' Services section as required.
