The Defence Security Division (DSD) is seeking skilled Security Managers to manage security services and functions across the Division that directly support Defence's mission to defend Australia and its national interests.
These various roles will provide the opportunity to make a significant impact on Defence's security outcomes.
As an EL1 Security Manager you will oversee a team, function and/or service in a protective security environment.
Your key responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Leading a team by managing workflow, allocating resources, and setting priorities;Providing security advice to stakeholders and support the implementation of security policies, practices and procedures underpinned by knowledge of legislative frameworks, government decision-making, and policy development and implementation;Delivering complex security policy, intelligence, protective and regulatory outcomes;Exercising a considerable degree of independence, requiring demonstrated sound decision making and judgement;Problem solving and issues management;Coordination and management of sensitive projects that impact on strategic, political or operational outcomes for Defence;Delivering Defence's investigative response into complex and sensitive security incidents in accordance with the Commonwealth's Protective Security Policy Framework, the Defence Security Principles Framework and the Australian Government Investigations Standard.If you are passionate about safeguarding Australia's national interest and assets, and working in fast-paced environment that is inclusive, supportive, values your contributions, supports your professional development and provides flexible working options, then Defence Security is the workplace for you.
About our Team The Defence Security Division provides adaptable security services to Defence and Defence industry, and provides timely, considered guidance to all Defence employees.
The division comprises of four branches that support Defence's mission and the integrated, focused force that is outlined in the 2024 National Defence Strategy:
Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA): The cornerstone of national security, AGSVA conducts the majority of Australia's Security clearance vetting.
This role is crucial not just to Defence, but to the whole of Australian Government, with AGSVA supporting 1100 Federal, State and Territory Government agencies and industry partners.

Defence Industry Security Branch (DISB): At the heart of the Defence Industry Security Program (DISP), DISB manages memberships, conducts audits, and helps Australian businesses deliver secure Defence capability and service, by providing security advice, support services, and helping DISP members better understand and manage security risks across their businesses.
DISB collaborates with leading agencies to enhance industry security, shaping a secure future for our national defence capabilities.
Security Policy and Services (SPS) Branch: Secures Defence through the delivery of security strategy and policy, international security agreements and treaties, security governance, and foreign work authorisations.
Your work with SPS will elevate national security standards, contribute to whole-of-government initiatives to uplift national security and foster a culture of security awareness.
Security Threat and Assurance (STA) Branch: STA works closely with our law enforcement and intelligence partners, such as the Australian Federal Police, state police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, to better understand security threats to Defence.
To achieve the Security Threat and Assurance mission, objectives and performance targets, the branch delivers:
Security intelligence and threat advice;Security incident response and investigation;Counter-Intelligence and Insider Threat risk management and investigations;Security risk and assurance activities;Physical security certification and accreditation services;Technical Surveillance and Countermeasures activities;Development and management of the Defence Insider Threat program.Our Ideal Candidate To be our ideal candidate, we're seeking Security Managers who possess a range of the following qualities to fill vacancies across our division:
Able to convey critical security information effectively and build trust with stakeholders at all levels, ensuring that security policies and procedures are understood and followed.Demonstrated capability in leading teams through complex security challenges, coordinating efforts across geographically dispersed teams, and ensuring outcomes align with security objectives and policies.Proficient in articulating security concerns, drafting detailed reports, and developing clear security guidelines to ensure all stakeholders are informed and compliant with security measures.Skilled in overseeing personnel, setting standards for behaviour and performance, and implementing strategies to address security risks and improve outcomes.Capable of assessing complex incidents, prioritising tasks effectively, and devising strategic solutions to mitigate risks and address security challenges.Comfortable with identifying, assessing, and managing potential risks, and making informed decisions to safeguard assets and information.Proficient in collaborating with various internal and external stakeholders, including to very senior levels, to ensure comprehensive security solutions.Building and maintaining strong interpersonal relationships should come naturally to you.To be considered for a security investigations-related role, demonstrated ability to exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of Commonwealth policy and legislation, as well as Defence security policy, to guide and deliver the investigative process and make recommendations in response to investigative findings.Application Closing Date: Monday 14 October 2024
