Working as a reference laboratory for regional sites, the Heidelberg laboratory receives samples from many different specialities including maternity and neonates, liver and kidney transplantation, haematology and oncology and the emergency department.About the roleReporting to the Principal Scientist, as a Grade 2 scientist you will work within our haematology and transfusion laboratories as part of the haematology team, who are passionate about providing best practice care for our patients.A regular day will see you:Ensuring the smooth running of the haematology or transfusion analysers throughout the day, including maintenance and running / checking QCCrossmatching and issuing blood components and products to collecting ward staffValidating haematology and transfusion testsReviewing blood filmsPerforming manual tests such as tube antibody investigations, red cell elution's, Kleihauer testing and IMT testingLiaising with PSA's, ward staff, couriers, haematology registrars and consultants, in person and on the phoneAbout youYou will be someone who has excellent communication skills and a commitment to quality in haematology and the transfusion laboratory. You will bring energy and drive to your work, and have a keen interest in developing your skillset.To be successful in this role, you will need:A Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (or equivalent and/or relevant science degree)For a Grade 2 role - A minimum of 8 years' experience in a relevant medical pathology laboratory, including blood film morphology experienceKnowledge of Quality Control and Quality Assurance programsAbility to interact and communicate effectively with colleagues including nursing and medical staffAbility to work independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a teamThe ability to prioritise and to cope with stressful and emergency situationsAbility to cope with changeFlexibility to work varying shifts including weekends and night shiftsWorking at Austin Health means enjoying a strong sense of purpose, engaging in meaningful work every day.
