Employed under the 'Medical Scientists Pharmacists and Psychologists Victorian Public Sector EBA 2021-2025'.
About Biochemistry The biochemistry department is committed to promoting the highest levels of quality pathology services to the Austin hospital, and surrounding health care facilities. Working as a reference laboratory for regional sites, the Heidelberg laboratory receives samples from many different specialties including maternity and neonates, liver and kidney transplantation, haematology and oncology, and the emergency department.
About the role Reporting to the Principal Scientist, as a grade 1 scientist you will work within our biochemistry laboratory as part of the biochemistry team, who are passionate about providing best practice care for our patients. A regular day will see you:
Ensuring the smooth running of the biochemistry analysers throughout the day, including maintenance and running/checking QC.Performing manual techniques, including the pre-treatment of samples.Validating biochemistry results.Liaising with PSAs, ward staff, couriers, Chemical Pathologists, and registrars, both in person and on the phone.About you You will be someone who has excellent communication skills and a commitment to quality in a biochemistry laboratory. You will bring energy and drive to your work and have a keen interest in developing your skill set.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
A Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine or equivalent and/or relevant science degree.Knowledge of Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs.Ability to interact and communicate effectively with colleagues including nursing and medical staff.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a team.The ability to prioritise and to cope with stressful and emergency situations.Ability to cope with change.Flexibility to work varying shifts including weekends and night shifts.Working at Austin Health means enjoying a strong sense of purpose, engaging in meaningful work every day.
