$65,000 – $75,000 FTE (depending on experience)Job Title: School Grounds and Maintenance PersonJob Type: Permanent Part-timeReports to: Business ManagerSalary Range: $65,000 - $75,000 FTE (depending on level of experience)Work Hours: Monday to Friday 12-5pm (negotiable)Key ResponsibilitiesGrounds Maintenance with Emphasis on Organic and Native GardeningMaintain and improve the school's gardens and landscaping, using organic and native gardening methods that align with sustainable practices.Perform routine landscaping tasks such as mowing lawns, trimming hedges, watering plants, and weeding, prioritizing eco-friendly and native species approaches.Create and maintain natural play spaces, vegetable gardens, and outdoor learning areas, with a focus on native plantings and sustainability.Uphold cleanliness standards by removing litter, debris, and fallen branches from school grounds.Building Maintenance and RepairsConduct minor repairs and preventative maintenance on school buildings and equipment, including painting, carpentry, and plumbing tasks.Coordinate with external contractors for specialised repairs or large-scale maintenance projects, as necessary.Conduct regular inspections of facilities to identify potential hazards and ensure safety standards are met.Maintain and manage maintenance log and contribute to annual maintenance planning.Health, Safety, and SustainabilityEnsure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental regulations, integrating sustainable practices in all maintenance activities.Monitor and maintain playgrounds, sports fields, and outdoor areas to ensure they are safe and suitable for use.Assist with emergency evacuation procedures and serve as a contact during emergencies related to facilities.Support for School Events and ActivitiesSet up and dismantle furniture and equipment for school events, assemblies, and meetings.Organize and maintain maintenance tools and supplies, with a focus on reducing waste and supporting sustainability.Respond to maintenance requests from staff promptly and perform additional duties as needed.Collaboration and TeamworkWork closely and collaboratively with the school's gardener to maintain and improve the outdoor environment.Coordinate with the administration team to ensure that facilities are ready for school events and activities.Provide regular updates on grounds and maintenance tasks and work with the administration to prioritize responsibilities.Qualifications and SkillsEducation: High school diploma or equivalent; additional certification in facilities management or horticulture is a plus.Experience: Previous experience in groundskeeping, maintenance, or a similar role, with knowledge of organic and native gardening preferred.Skills:Practical skills in landscaping, plumbing, carpentry, and painting.Strong knowledge of organic gardening techniques, native plants, and sustainable maintenance practices.Strong problem-solving skills, time management, attention to detail, and good organizational abilities.Physical stamina to perform outdoor tasks in various weather conditions.Additional RequirementsAbility to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends, to accommodate tasks requiring student-free spaces and events.Valid driver's license, own car and trailer.ACT Working With Vulnerable Persons Check is required.Working from Heights Training is desirable.Willingness to undergo background checks, as required for school personnel.Working ConditionsOutdoor work in various weather conditions.Physical labour, including lifting heavy objects and extended periods of walking or standing.Canberra Montessori School Values DiversityCanberra Montessori School values and fosters an inclusive community, built upon Respect, Connectedness, and Curiosity.
