The Opportunity Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) is seeking an experienced Safety Management System (SMS) specialist to join our Product and Service Safety (P&SS) team. This role is ideal for an individual with a passion for safety and a desire to support the continued development of BDA's Product and Service SMS. As an SMS Specialist, you will work closely with the Risk and Assurance Lead and the Policy and Promotions Lead; outcomes involve assuring and ensuring compliance, continuous improvement, and communication of Product and Service Safety strategies across BDA programs. This role requires collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders, leveraging your technical expertise to enhance Boeing's safety and airworthiness initiatives.
The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about safety management systems within a regulated environment and be comfortable working in a dynamic, technically complex organization. The role will report to the BDA Product and Service Safety Lead and is based in Brisbane; however, alternative locations and remote work options will be considered. Occasional interstate and local travel may be required.
Responsibilities: Support the Risk and Assurance Lead by developing, monitoring, and reporting on Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs) and assisting in the execution of SMS assurance activities and continuous improvement processes.Assist the Policy and Promotions Lead in the development and communication of safety policies and safety culture initiatives across the business.Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify and mitigate safety and airworthiness issues, contributing to the development and implementation of risk management solutions.Provide technical guidance and training to internal teams on safety and regulatory matters, with a focus on airspace operations, human factors, and safety management systems.Assist in the research, analysis, and assessment of safety and regulatory data to evaluate potential impacts on Boeing products and services.Facilitate safety risk management (SRM) processes and contribute to the ongoing development and maintenance of the Product & Service SMS framework.Support the investigation of organizational factors contributing to safety and airworthiness issues, and provide input on corrective actions.Address safety and regulatory inquiries, ensuring compliance with regulatory and company standards.The Successful Candidate Will: Demonstrate experience in Safety Management Systems within a commercial or military aviation environment.Have strong analytical skills to assess safety and regulatory data, identifying trends and informing decision-making.Collaborate effectively with stakeholders, including regulators, industry bodies, and internal teams, to resolve safety-related issues.Exhibit strong communication and interpersonal skills, providing clear guidance on technical safety matters.Be familiar with risk management tools and processes, such as BowTie XP and safety performance monitoring.Be eligible to obtain and maintain a Defence Security clearance and be cleared for International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).Desirable Experience: Experience in supporting the development and implementation of safety strategies and airworthiness policies.Lead/internal audit qualification.Knowledge of ICAO Annex 19 and DASA regulatory frameworks.Prior experience in training and safety communication initiatives.Basic understanding of BowTie risk management and technical expertise in airspace operations and safety management systems.Hold ICAM investigation qualifications (or commensurate training) and/or Defence Flight Safety Bureau (DFSB) Aviation Safety Officer (ASO) (Desirable).Experience in data analytic tools, e.g., Power BI.About Us Boeing Defence Australia is committed to enhancing the safety and airworthiness of its products and services.
