The Senior Manager, Project & Portfolio Management leads the Project Management Organization (PMO) for Ostomy Care Research & Development and Applied Research within the Technology & Innovation (T&I) group. This individual is responsible for establishing and enhancing project management capabilities to ensure the successful execution of a diverse project portfolio. The individual will manage a team of project management professionals who plan, execute, and monitor new product development, lifecycle management, and research projects. A key focus is continuously improving systems, processes, and ways of working to drive efficiency and effectiveness. This role is instrumental in fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and innovation while ensuring that the PMO delivers measurable value to the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the Project Management Organization Manage and guide a team of project managers, ensuring alignment with portfolio priorities and organizational strategy. Translate business strategies into clear, actionable goals and measurable performance expectations. Allocate resources effectively across near- and long-term priorities, adapting to changing needs. Anticipate challenges and identify opportunities to optimize team performance. Build and maintain strong relationships with peers, senior leaders, and direct reports to foster collaboration and achieve shared goals. Enhance team effectiveness through individual growth and capability-building. Develop and manage annual budgets aligned with business objectives. Optimize use of resources to support project portfolio delivery. Conduct performance evaluations, talent reviews, and succession planning to strengthen team capabilities. Track and meet key performance indicators (KPIs), including project timelines and operational metrics. Ensure compliance with corporate policies, processes, and procedures. Drive process improvements to enhance productivity and project outcomes. Oversee assigned projects while providing leadership and support to project managers as needed. Recruit, mentor, and develop staff to meet current and future business needs. Manage the Project Portfolio Ensure projects are executed in alignment with established metrics for quality, budget, and timelines. Provide oversight of the project pipelines to ensure timely execution within scope and budget, supporting portfolio reviews with the VP of R&D. Collaborate with the PMO Capability Center to implement best practices and shared tools across T&I. Partner with New Product Delivery Leads and project managers to align project plans with business objectives and ensure risks are effectively managed and communicated. Maintain a comprehensive understanding of portfolio projects, providing updates on risks and progress to senior leaders as needed. Plan and execute portfolio reviews with the VP of R&D, ensuring stakeholders are informed of project status and progress. Support Stage Gate reviews by collaborating with project managers and owners to ensure adherence to the product development process. Evaluate project outcomes post-completion to identify lessons learned and share insights with the PMO. Conduct regular reviews of budgets and resource planning, addressing gaps and initiating recruitment or training to meet strategic needs. Develop and maintain a portfolio governance structure for both Ostomy and Applied Research to ensure alignment and accountability. Skills & Experience:
Deep knowledge of medical device design controls and project management, adhering to applicable regulations. Comprehensive understanding of key project functions, including regulatory, quality, manufacturing, clinical, and commercial. Proven track record of leading cross-functional teams to deliver new products from concept to market. Strong communicator and strategic thinker with a focus on execution. Demonstrated ability to lead in a matrix structure, influence others, and build strong relationships. Leadership style that fosters development, coaching, and alignment with Convatec's High Performing Team principles. Effective and appropriate delegation to drive team success. Role model for values-based behaviors and collaboration. Skilled at partnering with colleagues to maximize shared resources. Qualifications/Education:
Minimum of 10 years of medical device industry experience, including at least 5 years of technical management/leadership responsibilities. Degree in a Scientific or Engineering discipline (advanced degree preferred). Demonstrable experience in regulated medical device product development. Business and strategic experience and ability to influence and effectively manage relationships with Internal and External stakeholders, such as marketing, quality and operations. PMP or equivalent certification, PfMP preferred. Working understanding of the ISO 13485 and 14971 standards, and FDA regulations for design controls. Principal Contacts
