QIMR Berghofer is a world-leading translational medical research institute focused on improving health by developing new diagnostics, better treatments and prevention strategies, specifically in the areas of Cancer, Infection and Inflammation, Brain and Mental Health, and Population Health.
Based in Herston, Brisbane and working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 600 scientists, students and non-research staff.
About Your Lab: The Genome Variation and Regulation Laboratory is interested in understanding the molecular drivers of breast cancer genetic risk.
Using Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS), we have identified over 200 genomic loci associated with breast cancer risk but defining the causal genes at these loci represents a major challenge.
We have used in vitro CRISPR screens to evaluate the role of candidate genes in several cancer hallmarks.
This has identified several candidates that we now wish to evaluate further with the view of understanding the mechanisms through which these targets function.
We also plan to perform in vivo CRISPR screens of the same GWAS candidate genes in murine mammary models.
Breast cancer genes detected in these experiments will be assessed for suitability as targets for prevention and treatment.
Role Purpose / Responsibilities: Applications are invited for an experienced biomedical research officer to join an established team to carry out high throughput functional screens of candidate risk genes in mouse models of breast cancer.
The following duties will apply:
Animal handling in primary and metastatic cancer models.Tissue and cell culture maintenance for high throughput functional screens.Genome editing with CRISPR, including molecular cloning, lentiviral infection, PCR, Western blotting, Next Generation sequencing library preparation.Experience with flow cytometry.Present research at academic seminars and at national and international conferences, and collaborate with other researchers at a national & international level.
This includes working as part of a team on externally funded projects subject to deadlines.Assist to supervise research support staff in your research areaContribute to student supervision, as neededModel and promote excellence and integrity, adhering to the highest quality and ethical standards.Ensure work practices comply with the requirements of the requirements of the Work Health and Safety Act, related legislative requirements and the Institute's Work Health & Safety (WH&S) policies/procedures and animal welfare.About you: You are required to have:
