At the forefront of cancer control, Professor Karen Canfell and her team play a pivotal role in supporting policy, practice and decision-making for innovative cancer solutions.
Their groundbreaking work has led to the transformation of Australia's National Cervical Screening Program, which transitioned to HPV testing in 2017, positioning Australia as the first country expected to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health issue.
Professor Canfell's team also leads Compass, Australia's largest-ever clinical trial with 76,000 women—the first trial worldwide to assess cervical screening in an HPV-vaccinated population.
Through her leadership, we're shaping the future of cancer control both domestically and internationally.
A key partner in the WHO Cervical Cancer Elimination Modelling Consortium (CCEMC), the team's work on the economic benefits and impact of cervical cancer elimination is cited in the World Health Organization's strategic plan.
Our team is recruiting a number of roles, suiting individuals with a strong understanding of the domestic and global cancer research and implementation ecosystem, in particular in the prevention, screening and early detection domains of cervical cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal, prostate and/or pancreatic cancer, and with experience contributing to the design, analysis, reporting and delivery of high-quality cancer control research, epidemiological, health services and implementation initiatives.
Your key responsibilities will be to: build and maintain a reputation for academic excellence through independent and innovative contributions to research, expanding knowledge and practice in the discipline
disseminate research knowledge and facilitate knowledge transfer to drive impact
maintain a research profile, including publication in academic or professional journals and engage in keynote addresses
lead successful competitive research grants and/or generate other research income by exploring diverse funding opportunities
maintain quality, standards and excellence in research activities and output
provide mentoring and guidance to lower-level academics
make a significant and holistic contribution to the research, administrative and governance activities of the school or faculty, including participating in committees and academic boards
contribute to a positive workplace culture in which diversity of thought, contribution, collaboration, excellence and achieving outcomes are valued and enabled
engage in community and alumni outreach, contribute expertise to public debates, and play a significant role in scholarly, research, or professional activities relevant to area of expertise
establish partnerships, collaborations and engage in translational research for impactful outcomes in research, development, commercialisation, and policy improvement.
About you have a PhD in an academic field relevant to the discipline
a strong understanding of cancer patients and populations, and in-depth knowledge of population health and health services research methodologies
have an established network of established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the faculty/University school and University
are acknowledged at a national level as influential in expanding knowledge within the discipline
significantly experienced in conducting original research and engaging in scholarly activity
significant experience supervising and mentoring others
demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively across a range of media and forums
In Addition, For the Senior Research Fellow Statistical Modelling Cancer Research deep experience in micro-simulation modelling, extensive experience evaluating policy questions around screening, vaccination and cancer treatment, including with a Low- and middle-income Country (LMIC) focus - Expected that projects will focus on the South East Asia and Pacific regions, (i.e.
in Vietnam, Cambodia, PNG, Fiji)
10+ years' experience in a similar role/setting
demonstrated software expertise, ideally including the Policy 1 cervix platform, output processing platforms such as Python, and excel
demonstrated experience leading scientific publications, and a strong publication track record
In Addition, For the Senior Research Fellow Lung Cancer Research experience in preparing statistical projections and modelling for cancer incidence and mortality, and projections of future cancer burden
deep knowledge of lung cancer
experience in working with multidisciplinary teams on joint publications and research contracts
ideally would have experience in supporting course coordination and resource development for education of cancer control.
understanding linkages between statistics microsimulation outputs
In Addition, For the Senior Research Fellow Bowel Cancer Research experience working with multi-disciplinary teams
strong knowledge of bowel cancer screening and prevention strategies
