Job Description The Australian Rivers Institute (ARI) was formed in 2006 and is one of Australia's largest university aquatic ecosystem research groups with globally recognised expertise in river, catchment and coastal ecosystems and the interaction with these systems in society. ARI combines outstanding scholarship with making a significant contribution to society through providing knowledge and advice.
ARI's talented researchers offer essential insights into the water cycle's linkages, interconnectedness, and interdependencies.
The Institute has over 180 staff and postgraduate students across the University's Nathan and Gold Coast campuses and hosts the International Water Centre , Coastal Management Research Centre and the Sustainable Water Future Programme .
We undertake high-quality research and postgraduate training in freshwater and estuarine ecology, catchment processes and water resource management.
This Research Fellow will contribute to the ARC Industry Fellowship Project, "A New Gully Model for a Healthier Great Barrier Reef", using cutting-edge model emulation techniques in applied mathematics to generate insights on gully erosion and remediation at the catchment scale.
Collaborate with the Queensland Water Modelling Network and the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation.
The Research Fellow will focus 80% on the ARC project and will also include a 20% teaching component, which involves teaching into the applied mathematics major in the School of Environment and Science.
In addition to the above, the position will be responsible for: Conducting research aligned with the ARC Industry Fellowship project goals.
Developing and maintaining collaborative networks with industry partners and allied organisations.
Applying for funding through relevant schemes to support project objectives.
Maintaining a strong publication record in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.
Contributing to teaching activities as required.
This position is co-located with Queensland Government Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) in connection with the Queensland Water Modelling Network.
The Research Fellow will co-locate with DETSI 1 day per week at the EcoSciences Precinct and be based at the Gold Coast campus on other days.
This is a fixed term (3 year) position.
This position can accommodate either part time or full time and will be primarily based at Griffith University Gold Coast.
As Griffith is a multi-site University you may be required to work across other locations.
Griffith University's campuses are located on the lands of the Yugarabul, Yuggera, Jagera, Turrbal, Yugambeh and Kombumerri peoples.
Salary Range The full time equivalent base salary will be Research Fellow Grade 2 range $110,464 - $131,180 per annum + 17% superannuation.
The total FTE package will be in the range $129,243 - $153,481 per annum.
About you To be successful in this role you will hold a PhD or equivalent qualifications or work experience in applied mathematics, computer science or a relevant field.
Key skills and experience: A track record of publication in high-impact journals.
Demonstrated expertise in model emulation and related techniques, such as surrogate modelling, machine learning, and AI.
Demonstrated ability to contribute to inter-disciplinary research while ensuring effective team communication and collaboration.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and with minimal supervision to meet competing deadlines and work effectively as a member of a team and communicate with a range of stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with industry/government.
Experience delivering engaging lectures and tutorials in applied mathematics and/or statistics.
