The PositionThe Sydney Institute of Marine Science seeks to appoint a Research Director. Working closely with the SIMS CEO, the Research Director will build and lead the delivery of research initiatives and activities across SIMS and its university partners.The Research Director will be engaging and future-focused, with a contemporary and collegiate style. Leading a culture of collaboration, inclusion, innovation, and impact, the Research Director will be an experienced researcher with a strong track record of collaboration and delivery of research outcomes.The Research Director will collaborate with SIMS researchers to design and develop research programmes and projects aligned to the Institute's strategy. They will identify and develop strategic funding applications and bids and engage with SIMS researchers and the wider national and international network to capture broader and larger scale opportunities. The Research Director will also develop and grow partnerships that broaden the institute's funding base with government, industry, corporate, and philanthropic sources.With the ability to build key relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, both internally and externally, the Research Director will demonstrate effective and nuanced communication necessary to attract support and investment. The Research Director will have a deep connection to the core values that underpin the work of the Institute and staff, assisting in shaping the culture of the Institute including supporting and mentoring Early Career Researchers, activating innovators, and developing the next generation of ocean change makers.Key attributes that will contribute to the success of this role include:Excellent communication and influencing skills, providing high quality written and oral advice, including communication of scientific issues clearly and persuasively to funders, decision-makers, and other key stakeholders.Demonstrated collaborative skills and ability to work with others on joint projects and activities.Proven track record of successfully attracting high-value grant funding and support for research initiatives through competitive grants, government funding, and strategic partnerships.Evidence of building and maintaining effective professional networks.Demonstrated ability to work effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people on projects relating to natural or cultural heritage values.The Research Director will have a PhD in marine science or a related discipline, i.e., sustainability, environmental economics, social science or equivalent, with relevant marine research experience and have the right to work in Australia.The Research Director will have key performance indicators (KPIs) that include applying for and securing external funding to support SIMS' strategic research priorities and growth, in addition to developing impactful partnerships with government, industry, and philanthropic sources.The remuneration package is commensurate with experience and will be negotiated with the successful candidate.The OrganisationThe Sydney Institute of Marine Science is a leading research institute dedicated to advancing marine science, developing ocean solutions, and promoting sustainable ocean practices for the benefit of current and future generations.
