Research & Fellowships (Education & Training)Full timeThe South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West and the Great Southern region of Western Australia.
SWAMS delivers a wide range of primary health and community programs and has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development.About the role:SWAMS is seeking a Research Coordinator to lead a culturally centered research initiative aimed at improving health system reform and service delivery for Aboriginal communities in WA's South West region.
This role focuses on advancing culturally grounded research, emphasising Indigenous Data Sovereignty, community engagement, and the development of frameworks for the organisation, aligned with Aboriginal concepts of health and wellbeing (HWB) including social and emotional wellbeing.The Research Coordinator will collaborate with Aboriginal academic researchers, community leaders, and the University of Western Australia (UWA) team.
The role involves building partnerships to co-develop culturally informed health measures, fostering local research capacity, and ensuring outcomes that are meaningful to Aboriginal communities.
This position supports integrating Noongar concepts of HWB into health policies and practices while facilitating community advisory processes and cultural leadership.This is an exciting newly developed role that will give you a lot of variety and ability to create impact on Aboriginal Health.
Your days will be varied but will include:Project Design and Implementation in collaboration with UWA project staff.Contribute to the development of partnerships with external organisations, including population data custodians.Ensure project approaches are community led and culturally centered, in alignment with Aboriginal world views.Coordinate the SWAMS Research Advisory Group, including receiving, reviewing, and collating information for decision by the RAG and SLT.Keep accurate records for research undertaken at SWAMS.Data Sovereignty and Governance - work with stakeholders to create a data governance framework that respects Aboriginal data sovereignty.About youAlong with having an understanding of Aboriginal community engagement, project coordination, and research methodologies you will have a genuine passion for improving health reform and service delivery to Aboriginal communities in the South West.
Other essential aspects and qualifications required are:Relevant post graduate research qualifications in social sciences, public health, Indigenous studies, and/or community development or a journal publication.Must reside in the South West and have local knowledge about the community.Ability to drive to outreach to the Greater Bunbury and South West regions.Demonstrated experience in conducting qualitative and/or quantitative research, including data collection, analysis and reporting.Why SWAMS?You would be working in an organisation committed to improving the health outcomes of the local Aboriginal community.
