The Opportunity
The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering has an opportunity for aResearch Associate. You will contribute as a team member to collaborative research focusing on applied industry research and academic publications. As a key member of an interdisciplinary team at UNSW you will collaborate closely with a major mining company and academics from various backgrounds. Your primary role is to develop and optimise cementitious grout mix designs for specific project needs by conducting various macro- and micro-analytical tests to better understand material behaviour and adjust mix design for desired performance. You will also develop and optimize testing methods to evaluate and trial grout injection techniques, accounting for complex geological formations.
This position will give you the opportunity to develop your scholarly research and professional activities by supporting the dissemination of research outcomes through appropriate channels and outlets and work closely with our industry partners. You will also have the opportunity to participate in conferences and workshops, assist with the supervision of students, and have active engagement with fellow researchers.
This role reports to Dr Ali Kashani and has no direct reports.
Salary, Level A – $110,059 to $117,718 per annum + 17% superannuation
Full time
Fixed-term contract – 12 months
Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia

Skills and Experience
A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
Proficient in concrete or cementitious grout technology.
Good understanding of geological formations, rock properties, and subsurface conditions.
A basic understanding of hydrology and groundwater management would be an advantage.
Background in industry-funded research projects or industry experience in a related field is advantageous.
Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and presentation skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders in research projects.
An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
