Based in Cairns, tropical far north Qld Part-time, 28 hours per week – ideal for a postgraduate student Competitive salary and benefits 5 weeks annual leave (pro-rata) Your work will be acknowledged in peer-reviewed publications and other material published by ICAN A truly supportive team with vast experience and knowledge This is an Identified Position and is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, as per section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld).

The Role – Research Assistant
As a Research Assistant with ICAN, you'll be involved in meaningful projects that reveal and address the financial challenges faced by Indigenous Australians.
This is more than just data collection; you'll be part of a research team whose work informs real policy changes and supports community-focused initiatives.
Your insights will help ICAN build effective programs that empower Indigenous consumers, and your work will gain recognition in ICAN's published materials.

Key Responsibilities :
Field and Desk Research : Conduct qualitative and quantitative research, including surveys, interviews, and literature reviews, to gather data on consumer issues.
Research Support : Assist in designing research tools, manage data collection, and contribute to analysis, ensuring findings are robust and relevant.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement : Collaborate with ICAN's teams and community partners to ensure research aligns with Indigenous perspectives and needs.
Documentation and Reporting : Accurately record research activities and contribute to publications, reports, and policy submissions that highlight your contributions.

The ideal candidate will be pursuing a postgraduate degree in social work, humanities, or a related field and will have a passion for community-focused research.

Selection Criteria

Relevant Study Area : You're currently enrolled or have completed a postgraduate program in social work, humanities, or a related field, with an interest in community-based research.
Research Skills : Demonstrated experience with research methodologies, data collection, and analysis, including both qualitative and quantitative approaches.
Cultural Awareness : Strong understanding of Indigenous cultures and protocols, with an ability to engage respectfully with Indigenous communities.
Clear Communication : Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey research findings clearly and concisely.
Attention to Detail : Ability to maintain high standards in data collection, reporting, and documentation.
Collaboration and Initiative : Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, with a proactive approach to responsibilities.
