They are expected to manage a wide range of patients with complex medical needs, often with limited support. The expectation is that they will be able to admit patients, write medication charts, perform procedures, and complete discharge summaries independently. They are also expected to have combined governance with the emergency department in some complex patient management. The patient burden can fluctuate, so it is important to be able to take on a fair share of new patients admitted every day. There is limited palliative and geriatric support therefore SMP's are expected to be able to manage complex geriatric patients and palliative patients independently without supervision.This is a demanding role but it can be very rewarding. Senior medical practitioners that can successfully manage these wards will have the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge in a challenging environment.
