The Department of Medicine staff consists of a mix of General Physicians and other Specialists, many with dual training. They have local cardiology, rheumatology, endocrinology, oncology, infectious diseases, palliative care, alcohol and other drugs, nephrology, gastroenterology, and many regular visiting specialists. There is on-site general surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics, gynaecology, psychiatry, paediatrics, a day procedures unit, and an 11-bed ICU.There are four General Medical teams, a busy Outpatient Department, and we provide outreach clinics to some of the most remote parts of Australia.Doctors gain valuable clinical exposure to Indigenous health issues, as well as first-hand experience of varied and specific challenges faced in providing health care to a population as diverse as that found in the Northern Territory.The Hospital:The Hospital is a 183-bed teaching hospital affiliated with Flinders University in South Australia and Charles Darwin University in Darwin. It is the only major hospital covering over a million square km with a strong focus on Indigenous and remote health because of such a dispersed population. Over two-thirds of acute admissions are Aboriginal people both from town and remote communities. Cultural, language, and communication skills are an important component of our service delivery.The Location:An intriguing place that hosts a jam-packed calendar of festivals, celebrations, and quirky events throughout the year. Hike, climb, and cycle your way through the chasms, craters, and sacred Aboriginal sites of the MacDonnell Ranges, or four-wheel drive the expansive Simpson Desert in the southeast.It is multicultural with well-established schools and amenities. Bicycle-friendly - rarely taking more than 10 minutes to get anywhere.
