The Renal Unit in Alice Springs Hospital is seeking expressions of interest from advanced trainees keen to explore a unique opportunity to develop skills and expertise in Nephrology.
Eligibility:
Trainees registered with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) for Advanced Training in Nephrology or dual Advanced Training in Nephrology and General Medicine.
Applicants to other Specialty Training Programmes in Australia.
Medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
Program Profile:
The Renal Unit in Alice Springs Hospital caters to the needs of patients with kidney disease in communities spread across an area larger than New South Wales in the Barkly and Central Australian regions of Northern Territory. These regions have amongst the highest incidence of diabetes and kidney disease in the world, disproportionately represented in First Nations Australians. Care is provided in Alice Springs as well as closer to home in regional and remote communities with innovative methods of service delivery, including care for dialysis and kidney transplant patients. It has a well-developed renal registry that aids early management and staff attuned to manage kidney disease across the spectrum of chronic kidney disease to transplant evaluation and follow-up.
The unit offers hospital care with in-centre haemodialysis, satellite haemodialysis, and remote dialysis. It has a busy interventional nephrology programme incorporating catheter access for dialysis, endovascular fistula procedures, and kidney biopsies. It has a fast-growing transplant program offering evaluation and follow-up for kidney transplantation aiming at improving health equity for First Nations people. Advanced training in Alice Springs Hospital is accredited by RACP for a year of core training in Nephrology.
The programme has been rated highly by trainees for education, research, interventional skills, renal replacement therapy, and First Nations Health supervised by an experienced team of RACP accredited supervisors.
