The Department of Anaesthetics, Pain and Perioperative Medicine, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre A fixed term 12-month position, with allowance for a negotiated flexible working pattern, 0.6 EFT, commencing in Feb 2025 This position offers a unique opportunity to develop research and development skills within the specialised field of Oncological Anaesthetics, Pain, and Perioperative Medicine.
The focus of this role is to support clinically and assist with the research, innovation, and development agenda of the High Acuity Team.
Background The High Acuity Team comprises Consultant Anaesthetists, Perioperative Medicine Physicians, ICU Outreach Nurses and Unaccredited anaesthetic registrars.
Their role is to prevent, monitor and respond to clinical deterioration within Australia's only Public Specialist Cancer Hospital.
High Acuity care at The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is a blend of Rapid Response and Perioperative Medicine.
It comprises of critical care outreach work and responsibility for the shared care delivered in our level 1-1.5 care area, The Enhanced Care Unit.
This is Australia's first oncological stand-alone Enhanced Care Unit.
Enhanced Care is a care philosophy well established within the United Kingdom that provides access to advanced haemodynamic monitoring and physiological supports.
It bridges the care gap between ward and ICU care.
It specialises in rapid turnover patient flow.
A typical admission would be for no more than 48 hours.
Catering to the needs of well-recovering patients who require access to physiological supports and monitoring, which is unavailable in a standard ward.
The augmentation of patient recovery in the first 48 hrs postoperatively has been proven to prevent clinical deterioration further down the admission line.
An opportunity has occurred to assist in the research, innovation and development of the High Acuity Team, including the Enhanced Care Unit, and to provide clinical support to this team when required.
Successful applicants who complete this year-long position will be invited to apply for a competitive 12-month unaccredited anaesthetic position the following year.
