Registered Nurse – Radiation Oncology
Orange Health Service
About the role
Cancer services in Orange have experienced dramatic growth over the last decade. We have improved local access to care, commenced radiation oncology treatment services, had a significant expansion of our workforce, and developed a highly successful new cancer clinical trials unit.
As a Radiation Oncology RN, you will have the privilege to care for the patient during their cancer journey: from diagnosis to treatment, cure/remission, to end of life. You will work both autonomously, and as part of the radiation oncology multidisciplinary team, with lots of interaction with our radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, allied health, ward & chemotherapy nurses and clinical nurse specialists. While you work alongside the radiation therapist you are not part of delivering treatment.
Work is Monday to Friday during business hours (no shift work), in a small team of three nurses who are friendly, welcoming and supportive. You will need to excel at prioritisation and time management as this is a high patient volume area.
Other tasks include assessment and management of treatment toxicities, management of PEGs, pain and anxiety management, highly specialised wound dressing/management, referral and follow up care for patients throughout and beyond treatment, ongoing education of patients and families, and palliation and comfort care.
A holistic role you will provide advocacy for this very vulnerable population, be a familiar face each day when they come for treatment, a teacher, a support person and shoulder to lean on/ear to listen. Closing the information loop when someone has been given the all clear, or proceeds to end of life care - we are their partner from beginning to end on this incredible journey.
As a large department there are lots of opportunities to learn new skills, attend conferences and we provide extensive training and mentorship to enable you to confidently undertake your role.
