Details of the offer

The Employed Model Program is an exciting initiative through NT Health that supports registered nurses to gain employment, experience and certification in Paediatric nursing. Specifically, Royal Darwin Hospital is offering registered nurses paid employment while completing their Graduate Certificate Nursing- Paediatric Specialisation (one year full time or two years of part time study). Staff employed under this model of care will be financially supported to complete their Graduate Certificate in Paediatric Nursing through a recognised university course.
Paediatric Nursing, Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospital The Department of Paediatrics has one of the most varied and interesting general paediatric practices in Australia and the majority of our work is with Indigenous children and their families.
The Department of Paediatrics consists of: a 22-bed General Paediatric and Adolescent ward (5A), a 14- bed Isolation ward (5B), a 4- bed day procedure unit and an outpatient department. The wards admit around 3000 children per year whilst the outpatients department sees around 7000 children per year between the paediatricians, registrars and visiting Interstate Sub-Specialists. On top of the services provided at RDPH, the paediatrics department also provide paediatric outreach to 37 remote communities of the Top End.
You will encounter many common paediatric conditions in addition to those more prevalent in the Top End – bronchiectasis, rheumatic heart disease, post-strep glomerulonephritis, malnutrition and infectious diseases, such as melioidosis. You will also care for adolescents with complex medical and mental health concerns, and those with complex psychosocial risks for which we are overrepresented on a national level.
Professional development program The formal program occurs over 12 months with a requirement to be working in the unit prior to or on commencement of formal study. Attendance to practical study days are supported on site and include Airway assessment and management, sedation and Paediatric Advanced Life Support. You will work with and be supported by dedicated paediatric educators and a multi-disciplinary network of care providers with opportunities to rotate across different areas within the unit.
To apply for the program you mus t: • Be an Australian citizen or hold a visa allowing ongoing, full-time employment in Australia (a copy of your visa or passport must be supplied with your cover letter and resume).
• Have a minimum of one year post registration (inclusive of a Graduate Program) experience in an acute health care setting.
• Be or plan to be enrolled in a recognised Graduate Certificate Nursing (Paediatric specialisation) for Semester 2 2024.
Conditions of the contract You will be provided with leave to attend study sessions, however, must be able to work all rostered shifts across all areas within the paediatric and neonatal services. You will be required to successfully complete academic course and clinical practice requirements each semester in order to continue the term of employment and reimbursement.
Fee information: The RDPH Division of Women's, Children and Youth will subsidise up to 100% of the cost associated with each unit of study, at the manager's discretion. The remainder of the course costs will be covered by the employee. Students are advised to consider the personal cost associated with choosing a university course.
University fees are paid for by the student and reimbursed through the organisation at the completion of each semester. To be eligible for reimbursement students need to complete part one of By-law 41 at the commencement of each semester and part two on completion.
Recognised university providers The following university graduate certificates are preferred as part of this employed model program:
• University of Tasmania Graduate Certificate in Nursing (Paediatric stream)
• Curtain University Graduate Certificate Child & Adolescent Health Nursing
Positions and locations This program is undertaken in Royal Darwin Hospital.

The program will allow nurses to apply their postgraduate learning into practice in an exciting and challenging clinical environment. Each student will spend clinical time being exposed to a number of sub specialities which will allow them to place theory into practice and provide opportunities to expand their repertoire of clinical skills and provide a solid base for their ongoing learning.
Clinical experience and practical support will be provided by Royal Darwin Hospital through Hospital and Ward Orientation, Study Days and supernumerary shifts on both ward 5A and 5B. Optional Supernumerary time may be offered in areas such as outreach or adolescents as applicable to your study.
