The medical emergency team (MET) works in collaboration with medical and nursing staff from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Emergency Department (ED), and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to provide a rapid response and assessment, management, and follow-up review of patients requiring a medical emergency response or who are at risk of acute deterioration across the Canberra Hospital (CH) campus.
The Rapid Response service within MET aims to reduce the number of MET calls through the early identification, referral, and management of patient deterioration. This is the first step in a staged approach to establishing a nurse-led MET response through the introduction of Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) roles within the MET.
