This position is located in: Mt Isa
ATSILS is a not-for-profit, community-based organisation that delivers innovative, professional criminal, civil and family law services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients throughout Queensland.
We are 50 years old, and have 300 staff including a specialist Through Care service to complement our legal services. We are fully government funded, and this Legal role is tied to ongoing funding, currently set to 30 June 2025.
You will havefrequent opportunity to provide expert legal services directly to clients, and to monitor and mentor staff under your supervision . You can also relyon the considerable State-wide resources of the Chief Executive Officer and thePrincipal Legal Officer. Our Directors of Laws are also available to work closelywith you on case-based work in Criminal, Family and Civil Laws.

A corporateservices team based in Brisbane provides administrative, human resources andpublic relations support; locally, administration support for regionalmanagement ensures a knowledgeable office system.
Selection Criteria:

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA (7)

1. Val ue s: a lignmentto the values and vision of ATSILS and an appreciation of and sensitivity tothe challenges our clients have faced, and continue to face, in their fight forand their right to justice and equity.
2. Qualifications: admissionas a Legal Practitioner within the State of Queensland or holder of (oreligibility for immediate acquisition of) a current Practising Certificate . .
3. Client service and file management: capacityto provide both high level client services in Criminal Law proceedings while ensuring exemplary casemanagement standards.
4. Core legal duties:  provenhigh level of professional service in all aspects of Criminal Law – with bothadult and youth jurisdictions; a demonstrated knowledge of diversionaryalternatives available to Police/Magistrates/Judges, and an understanding ofgeneral legal principles in Family and Civil Law.
5. Confidence in and knowledge of legislation:  anin-depth working knowledge of the Youth Justice Act 1992, (as amended) and the Criminal Code 1899, (as amended).
6. Access, teamwork and communication: preparednessto work after hours if necessary; willingness to assist in the development ofCourt Support/Field Officers' and other staff members' training/education;sound interpersonal and communication skills.
7. Management capacity:  demonstratedby a constructive and prompt approach to organisational needs in compliance,safety and security balanced by the career development interests ofteam-members.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA (2)
1. Ability to use Microsoft Office in a Windows networked environment. 2. Mobility, access and safety: a current Queensland Driver Licence and ability to drive in all reasonable conditions may be required for the role, dependent upon the location; a willingness to undergo a Criminal Record Checkto achieve a National Police Certificate (Australia-wide Disclosable Criminal History). Candidates may be required to disclose misconduct (criminal convictions, prosecution investigations etc.,) that prevent an ATSILS Security clearance in relation to any conviction for fraud or other dishonesty related criminal offences. To this end, a preferred candidate must be prepared to consent to a criminal history check being conducted (if requested). Note: A criminal history does not automatically preclude selection for interview, and a preliminary check can be discussed with the HR Manager after a candidate has been shortlisted for interview.
