Maritime Safety Queensland - Regional Harbour Master - Mackay

Key Responsibilities: Manage the safe movement of shipping in and around Queensland Pilotage Areas.Oversee the service delivery and regulation of relevant standards.Establish and maintain strategic partnerships.Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) is a branch of the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) within the Customer Services, Safety and Regulation (CSSR) Division. Our role in MSQ is to protect Queensland's waterways and the people who use them - providing safer, cleaner seas.
The Regional Harbour Master (RHM) plays a vital role in supporting the Executive Directors and General Manager, MSQ. This position requires strong leadership and management skills to drive the delivery of government priorities, address strategic and management issues, and ensure excellence in client service delivery.
The RHM is the senior point of contact within the region, responsible for liaising and collaborating with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders on maritime operations, infrastructure, engineering, and port development, ensuring alignment with departmental and government directions. The RHM will liaise with government and non-government bodies, industry peak bodies, the community, and the media on maritime safety issues, MSQ legislation and standards, maintaining MSQ's legislation and standards, and delivering services in line with whole-of-government strategic directions.
The RHM will ensure high levels of preparedness and support the Executive Director (Port Operations and Vessel Traffic Services) in delivering support and services across the portfolio. The RHM will also act as the designated Incident Controller when required.
Qualifications and Experience: The RHM requires a strategic leader with significant maritime experience (both ashore and sea-going) and a proven track record of success as an executive or senior manager within a large, complex and decentralised organisation. You possess a high-level of knowledge and understanding of maritime safety matters and industry developments at the departmental, state, national and international level, including their implications for MSQ, the Department and the government of the day.
With strong stakeholder management skills, you will develop effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including equivalent agencies in other states, local government, authorities and industry bodies, to negotiate and influence outcomes on behalf of MSQ. You will strive to be a dynamic and supportive leader, demonstrating your passion for the development of people and your focus on continuous improvement.
