The Writing and Society Research Centre (WSRC) is unique in Australia in combining research in the forms of both creative writing and literary scholarship.
The Centre's members include critics, theorists, poets, novelists, essayists, translators, editors and publishers, and a large cohort of postgraduate students engaged in PhDs and DCAs.
The Centre is located on the Parramatta South campus of Western Sydney University, within the School of Humanities and Communication Arts.
The Centre plays a major role in both the regional and national promotion of Australian literature.
As a research hub, we are unique in housing two major institutions in Australian literary publishing: the Sydney Review of Books and the highly decorated independent press Giramondo Publishing.
We have a strong track record in mentoring writers from the Western Sydney region through initiatives such as Finishing School and The Writing Zone.
The Sydney Review of Books was founded by the Centre in 2013, as an online journal devoted to long-form criticism.
Over the past decade it has become Australia's premier literary review journal.
The Opportunity  Are you passionate about literature and eager to make a significant impact in the literary community?
Sydney Review of Books (SRB) is seeking a dedicated Deputy Editor to join the team.
In this pivotal role, you will work closely with the SRB Editor to coordinate our journal's publishing, fellowship, and public programs, with a special emphasis on digital production, audience development, and community engagement.
This is a unique opportunity to work with some of Australia's best writers, nurture emerging talent, and innovate with programming.
As Deputy Editor, you will play a crucial role in the copyediting and publication of our weekly essays, produce our fortnightly newsletter, and manage various partnership projects.
Your responsibilities will also include applying for and managing grants and other potential sources of income, as well as developing and implementing broad strategic initiatives to further our mission.
Beyond the editorial duties, you will contribute intellectually to the activities of the Centre and the School, particularly through research seminars, postgraduate activities, and international collaborations.
You will also mentor young and emerging writers from the Western Sydney region, supporting the University's policy of regional engagement.
This is a part-time 21 hours per week (0.6 FTE) fixed-term position until 31 December 2028.
You will be based at Parramatta City Campus, although travel to other campuses of the University may be required.

About You You hold a doctoral degree or a first-class Honours degree with equivalent professional experience in literary studies or a related discipline.
You demonstrate a steadfast commitment to critical writing, have detailed knowledge of Australian publishing, and hold a strong track record in the editing and/or production of high-quality literary journals.
You will relish working in a small-team environment and across many concurrent projects, including partnerships with other literary and arts organisations.
You will have the skills and vision to help shape Australian critical culture while expanding the journal's national and international readership.

Remuneration Package: Academic Level A $65,917 to $79,638 p.a (comprising Salary of $55,700 to $67,295 p.a., plus Superannuation and Leave Loading) Please note - the above salary range is 0.6 FTE of the full-time equivalent rate.
