The Office of the Supervising Scientist ensures the protection of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, and the local communities from the effects of uranium mining by undertaking environmental research and monitoring, participating in and overseeing the regulatory process and developing standards and practices for environmental protection.
The Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (ERISS) provides specialist technical advice to the Supervising Scientist on the protection of the environment and people of the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) from the effects of uranium mining.
The primary function of ERISS is to conduct research into developing standards and leading practice methodologies for monitoring and assessing the environmental impact of uranium mining in the ARR.
Research programs include: water and sediment quality; ecosystem restoration and landform; and environmental radioactivity.
The key duties of the position include:Manage the day-to-day operation of the radiochemistry and alpha spectrometry laboratories, including staff, resources, workflow, data and records, procurements, commercial contracts and WHS requirements.Apply complex wet chemistry techniques to prepare environmental samples for low-level radionuclide analysis.Install and maintain alpha spectrometry equipment and use it to measure the radionuclide content of prepared samples and calculate and report results.Develop, review and update standard operating and quality assurance procedures for radiochemistry and alpha spectrometry.Train and build capability in technical staff working in radiochemistry and alpha spectrometry.Lead or assist with field-based tasks to support research and environmental monitoring activities within the branch.Perform the corporate role of either chemical or radiation safety officer (or deputy).Mandatory qualificationsA degree in chemistry (or a related discipline) or equivalent experience working in a wet chemistry laboratory.To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process.
This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period of 6 months.The successful applicant must:Hold a current Apply First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain this qualification.Hold a current coxswains licence or have the ability to obtain.Hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers licence.Meet physical fitness minimum standards to undertake work within the role including firefighting as needed.Be a proficient swimmer.NotesRelocation assistance is subject to negotiation.The physical requirements of the role(s) involve a combination of outdoor and office-based work.You will be required to complete specific training (including refresher training) related to the role including remote area training, defensive driving, first aid and CPR courses.You will be required to travel in remote/isolated locations in northern Australia or its near northern neighbours, using a variety of transport including vessels, light/commercial aircraft, helicopters and manual four-wheel drive vehicles.You will be required to wear an official uniform supplied by the department, including during field operations (as applicable), in accordance with the department's uniform policy.You will be required to wear appropriate protective personal equipment and clothing to comply with departmental Work Health & Safety policies and procedures.We currently have one vacancy available for immediate filling in Darwin.
