Qimr Berghofer Medical Research Institute | Research Officer / Senior Research Officer

Details of the offer

Experienced Immunology Researcher with expertise in T cell biology
Opportunity: Work in a highly dynamic work environment in Brisbane
Compensation: Attractive salary packaging & superannuation options
About QIMR Berghofer:
QIMR Berghofer is a world-leading translational medical research institute focused on improving health by developing new diagnostics, better treatments, and prevention strategies, specifically in the areas of Cancer, Infection and Inflammation, Mental Health and Neuroscience, and Population Health. Based in Herston, Brisbane, and working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 600 scientists, students, and non-research staff.
About the Immunopathology Laboratory:
We are investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive immune-mediated pathologies. A major focus for the laboratory is donor stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT), which is an important curative therapy in the treatment of blood cancers. However, the application of allo-SCT is limited by serious complications such as Graft vs Host disease (GVHD), and the risk of relapse which significantly impacts patient mortality and quality of life. Our current focus is developing new therapeutic strategies to treat/reduce the risk of GVHD, whilst retaining the curative benefit of SCT to improve outcomes for cancer patients.
We have several exciting funded projects designed to understand the immune mechanisms that drive disease, identify novel targets, and develop new treatment strategies, and are looking to expand our team.
Role Purpose / Responsibilities:
We are looking for a post-doctoral researcher to join our team and work with us on a range of funded projects and contribute to new projects and grant proposals.
Key Responsibilities:
This role will require experience in advanced immunological assays to characterise immune responses in clinical samples and pre-clinical models such as allogeneic stem cell transplantation. You will be active in the laboratory and responsible for day-to-day project management, as well as be involved in the supervision/mentoring of junior members of the group. Strategic project planning and experimental design to generate high-quality data, and communicate these findings through scientific writing for publication. This role is an excellent opportunity for an early-mid career postdoctoral researcher to develop their experience as part of a multidisciplinary team. As a member of the QIMRB Infection & Inflammation Program, you will have the opportunity to work in a highly dynamic, well-resourced, and productive research environment that fosters academic career development.
About You:
Applications are invited for a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to take part in cutting-edge immunology research. To be successful in this role, you must have a PhD qualification, a strong immunology background, experience in project management, and the ability to work independently.
Skills and Experience Required:
Relevant doctoral qualification (PhD) and prior experience in immunology research. Excellent track record of academic achievement and publications relative to opportunity. Expertise with preclinical (murine) models of inflammatory disease. Experience in tissue processing and immunophenotyping (including advanced flow cytometry). Capacity to contribute to several projects concurrently. Exceptional organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and coordinate tasks to meet competing deadlines. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to relate to staff across all levels of the organisation. Excellent attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and reliable scientific records. Demonstrated expertise in T cell biology, function, and immunophenotyping. Experience with preclinical models of transplantation. Computational/Bioinformatics experience (including R packages) would be a significant advantage. Exposure to collaborative drug development projects with industry/commercial partners. Exposure to clinical trials/research in a hospital environment. Please refer to the position description on the QIMR Careers website for a full list of responsibilities and key selection criteria.
Remuneration: Salary range is $96,100 to $103,108 p.a. (Research Officer) and $108,498 to $128,721 p.a. (Senior Research Officer) plus super and generous salary packaging. This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for up to 3 years. Level of appointment will be dependent on skills and experience.
