Python Engineer: Integration of Distributed Energy Resources Department : Operations Division : Systems Capability Reference number : 11658 AEMO at the Heart of Energy AEMO is Australia's independent energy system and market operator and system planner.
AEMO's purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians.
Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this.
We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection.
Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.
About the role The Operational DER (Distributed Energy Resources) Management team, within AEMO Operations, is responsible for integration of distributed energy resources (DER) into AEMO's operational and technical functions.
This includes analysing DER behaviours, developing suitable power system models to represent the behaviour of DER during power system disturbances, applying these models to determine the impact of DER on power system security, and implementing the required management measures in AEMO's operational systems.
This role involves collaborating closely with the team responsible for the AEMO Modelling Platform (AMP), to integrate PSSE power system models representing DER and load so they can be robustly and easily applied in power system snapshots and used by various AEMO teams for modelling studies.
The candidate will also be involved in updating various tools and systems used by the AEMO Control Room to manage DER in real time in the operation of the grid.
The role requires strong skills and aptitude for programming, as well as a strong understanding of power systems analysis, to develop the code required as well as test and validate the integration of the models, and confirm correct operation of the tools developed.
The selected candidate will go through a rigorous onboarding training process for several months to learn the strict quality control and programming requirements for this system.
This is a contract position, with an expectation that following this intensive training, a strong candidate is very likely to find ongoing opportunities at AEMO, as a growing organisation with high demand for this specialist skillset.
What you will be doing • Programming to develop the code required to integrate PSSE models for DER and load into AEMO's AMP system.
• Testing and validation of the models to confirm the integration is performed successfully and the models behave as desired in PSSE power system studies.
• Development of robust and user-friendly interfaces for maintenance of the model parameters.
• Working collaboratively with both the DER Operations team, the AMP development team, and other AEMO Operational teams.
• Application of PSSE models in power system studies to analyse DER impacts on power system security.
• Collaborate and liaise with technical representatives at transmission network service providers about their application of the models in their power system studies.
What you will bring to the role • Programming skills and experience, particularly in Python.
• Experience with version control, particularly using git.
• An understanding of power systems and power system analysis.
• Experience working with power system models such as PSSE, PSCAD, PowerFactory or similar is highly desirable, especially in running dynamic studies.
• Previous experience working with EMS or SCADA systems or similar is highly desirable.
• Complex problem solving and critical thinking skills.
• Passionate about programming and power systems, and excited to work as part of team that shares that passion.
• Excited to learn and develop skills towards becoming a subject matter expert at AEMO in AMP systems.
In return some of our benefits to you • Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
• Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
