Latrobe Regional Hospital (LRH) has an exciting opportunity for a Public Health Officer to join our Health Protection team in the Gippsland Region Public Health Unit (GRPHU) on a fixed-term, part-time basis, until the end of June 2026.
The GRPHU is led and coordinated by LRH and is one of nine local Public Health Units across Victoria, working closely with the Department of Health in a state-wide system of public health delivery and response. The GRPHU works throughout the Gippsland region across the public health pillars of prevention, protection, and promotion. The PHO within the GRPHU protects public health by helping prevent, investigate, and manage cases, incidents, and communicable disease outbreaks in the community. Reporting to the Health Protection Manager, the PHO responds to notifiable conditions under the Public Health & Wellbeing Act 2008 and provides operational support in response to other health protection issues, incidents, or emergencies as directed.
The PHO is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, responsive, and evidence-based health protection strategies that meet professional, organisational, legal, and ethical standards in order to optimise public health outcomes for the community.
The PHO is required to contribute to a positive culture, supporting change; maintaining a safe working environment and ensuring effective utilisation of resources within a cycle of continuous service improvement and will play a vital role within the GRPHU to achieve outcomes, including notifiable Communicable Disease Management and engagement with key stakeholders e.g., Health Care providers, local councils, and community organisations.
The PHO is a motivated, community-focused individual who has a good understanding of the local community and is passionate about providing direct support to improve public health outcomes.
About you
Ideal candidates for this role will:
Have a good understanding and knowledge of the principles and practices relating to health protection and notifiable communicable diseases. Previous experience working in the public health field or has completed or/willing to undertake a tertiary qualification in public health or a related public health field. Ability to interact in an empathetic and non-judgemental manner with culturally diverse populations and persons experiencing a wide range of social conditions. Strong computer literacy, including ability to use Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel & Outlook) and Microsoft 365 platforms (e.g., Teams and SharePoint). Ability to work from the Traralgon office (onsite) and to be rostered on call as part of a rotating roster. Latrobe Regional Health offers a range of benefits including:
