The Project Director, reporting to the Executive Program Director, performs an important leadership role.
They will work with considerable independence be accountable under broad direction to perform and achieve very complex project management work within an integrated workforce. They will require extensive knowledge and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence's mission and policies requirements.
The role is critical in overcoming delivery challenges, optimising resource management, engaging with stakeholders, and driving continuous innovation in project and contract management practices. Additionally, this role involves orchestrating project resources, mentoring project managers, and ensuring the consistent application of project controls and systems.
The Project Director will be responsible for influencing and developing strategies, policies, priorities and operational practices in support of Defence objectives based on high level decision-making and judgement. They will provide strategic advice to senior management and stakeholders as well as leading and assuming accountability for very complex work or sensitive projects or work programs that have strategic, political or operational significance.
The Project Director will lead a work team, plan and manage a range of human and physical resources and exercise associated people and financial responsibilities. They will provide strategic direction to the work unit, including developing business plans, strategies and priorities and monitor work flow and performance. They are accountable for developing, coaching and reviewing individual, team and business performance, and will identify opportunities for building team capability and continuous improvement. They will set work aligned with strategic objectives and communicate expected outcomes.
They will have extensive knowledge of methodologies, systems and procedures within the Project Management function and have the ability to translate this into strategy. They will provide a strategic level of specialist, professional and technical expertise, potentially relating to the work of different function areas. They will initiate, establish and maintain strong relationships with a network of stakeholders internally and externally and will have the ability to recognise shared agendas and work toward mutually beneficial outcomes.
This position has people management responsibility and as such you will be required to exercise your people management skills and knowledge to lead a high performing and cohesive team.
This role will involve occasional interstate travel.
About our Team
A Program Management Office is currently being established within the Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Group (NSSG) for the Infrastructure Directorate to deliver Defence's large vessel infrastructure mega-project, within the Henderson Consolidation Program at Henderson, WA.
The Infrastructure Directorate supports portfolio level decision-making and provides a consistent approach to the management of shipbuilding and sustainment infrastructure, by optimising usage of current assets, analysing future demand against planned capability and capacity, sponsoring required enhancements, and maintaining effective stakeholder engagement across Defence, Industry, and State and Territory Governments. The Directorate works very closely with key stakeholders within Defence, with external Commonwealth and State agencies, and with contract organisations.

Represent Defence at external forums and liaise on behalf of Defence on significant, very complex or technical project management issues with external practitioners, industry representatives and government agencies;
Lead and supervise – motivate and mentor project managers, provide clear and consistent communication, setting clear performance and behavioural standards, managing performance, delegating responsibility and guiding and developing people;
Translate strategy into operational goals and appropriate tasks for others, creating a shared sense of purpose within the business unit;
Manage and support project processes to ensure compliance with legislative and regulatory frameworks, as well as Government probity related principles;
Possess strong self/staff management skills to deliver required outputs to tight deadlines, and support a team of integrated professionals to achieve result;
Demonstrate exceptional written communication skills and have experience in drafting high-level key documents (project reports, plans/processes, briefing materials, and ministerial correspondence);
Demonstrate ability to review and analyse documents for accuracy and completeness;
Analyse information – probe for clarity, produce solutions, make judgements, and think systemically;
Adapting and responding to change - accept new ideas, adapt to interpersonal styles, show sensitivity to different cultures or backgrounds and deal with ambiguity at work;
Exercise initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures;
Develop governance frameworks and monitor compliance; and
Build and sustain effective relationships with team members and actively participate in teamwork and group activities.
