APS 5 - $81,690 - $89,615 per annum plus superannuation Biosecurity Plant and Science Services Division Cairns (QLD) or Darwin (NT) •  Working with Indigenous Rangers across northern Australia.• communities.This position is an 'Identified' position which signifies that the role has a strong involvement in issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.The successful applicant must have an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People.Who we are  Science and Surveillance Group (SSG) is comprised of scientists, operations and support staff responsible for regulatory advice and training, technical input to biosecurity policy, regulation activity in the Torres Strait and diverse surveillance and diagnostic services around Australia, including animal and plant health surveillance measures under the Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy (NAQS).The Indigenous Rangers and Business Management Section (IRBMS) helps deliver biosecurity surveillance by engaging Indigenous Rangers on a fee for service basis to undertake biosecurity, ghost net and marine debris activities.The section maintains this effort and builds further biosecurity capability and provides economic opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across northern Australia.The section also includes the Business Management Unit which helps coordinate budget measures and projects, oversights the implementation of the SSG Strategic Roadmap and undertakes secretariat for the Northern Australia Biosecurity Framework Reference Group.The Job The job requires a positive, motivated person experienced in project support and First Nations engagement to support the delivery of projects and initiatives under the Indigenous Ranger Biosecurity Program and the Indigenous Ranger Coastal Clean-up Project (IRCCP).This exciting project involves supporting Indigenous Ranger teams to manage the ever-growing issue of Ghost Nets and Marine Debris on Sea Country across the north of Australia in a fast paced, dynamic team where you are really making a difference in the ocean health and biosecurity space.The duties of the role include, but are not limited to: •  supporting the Senior Project Officer – Ghost Nets with a range of project management and contracting support services, including an understanding of procurements, drafting contact variations and subsequent monitoring of progress to ensure project outcomes are achieved to a high standard •  the drafting and preparation of a range of written material including data reports, briefs and project documentation and liaising with internal and external stakeholders in relation to content •  supporting the preparation of project briefs and reports for informed decision-making and planning •  communicating with key internal and external stakeholders, as required, to facilitate the exchange of information and support project coordination •  managing competing priorities and organise workflow for self whilst maintaining good attention to detail and delivering within timeframes •  contributing to business area improvement initiatives and projects •  promoting the APS Values, the APS Employment Principles and ensuring compliance with the APS Code of Conduct •  exercising appropriate delegations in accordance with policy, processes and guidelines.Please note that this role may be able to be performed from either of the locations listed on the job description.The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.What we are looking for Knowledge and experience The successful will have: •  an understanding of terrestrial, coastal and marine ecosystems •  strong cultural awareness, particularly in working with First Nations people in remote areas in northern Australia •  experience working with Indigenous Communities, ideally in northern Australia.The following are highly desirable but not mandatory: •  Experience producing communications products to outwardly promote ranger achievements and project milestones.•  Experience supporting the coordination of training events or forums.•  A passion for and experience in marine/Sea Country conservation and/or management.•  Demonstrated project management/support experience.Eligibility and other requirements The successful applicant must: •  hold a current Apply First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain this qualification •  hold and maintain a current manual driver's licence and ability to drive a 4WD vehicle •  note that relocation assistance is subject to negotiation •  note that the physical requirements of the role(s) involve a combination of outdoor and office-based work •  note that you may be required to perform occasional out-of-hours and weekend work •  note that you will be required to complete specific training (including refresher training) related to the role including remote area training, defensive driving, first aid and CPR courses •  note that you will be required to travel in remote/isolated locations in northern Australia or its near northern neighbours, using a variety of transport including vessels, light/commercial aircraft, helicopters and manual four wheel drive vehicles •  note that you will be required, from time to time, to work in difficult, remote and harsh environments (possibly for extended periods) under limited supervision or in teams •  wear appropriate protective
