Details of the offer

We want our young people to grow into conscientious global citizens who respect and value others. In addition to our core values, we are fortunate to have other methods available to help students navigate life both at the college and within the greater Mildura community. Standing Up, Standing Strong Courage to Care visited the college at the start of the week to once again present their 'Upstander' program. Our students in Years 8 and 9 participated in workshops that referenced the Holocaust and other historic events to illustrate the inherent dangers posed by racism, discrimination, and bystander behaviour. They then learned how to become Upstanders by behaving in ways that demonstrate integrity, courage, and strength. Courage to Care believes that we can all become extraordinary Upstanders, and we are so happy to welcome them to the college. These programs are free to all Victorian schools and give young people the tools they need to empower themselves and stand up against bullying and racism wherever they encounter it. Languages Week This week was also Languages Week at the college, and what a celebration it was. Along with the two languages we instruct as subjects, Italian and English, students also learned about local Indigenous languages as well as other languages spoken in our community. Here are the highlights: VCE Italian students enjoyed the special treat of lunch and Italian conversation practice at The Italian Mildura. Year 7 students used their creativity to craft beautiful Italian mosaics out of colourful paper. In Extended Pastoral Care, students listened to a presentation on the benefits of learning a second language and found out why Italian language and culture continue to make such an impact in Sunraysia. They then explored both the Paakantji and Mathi Mathi Indigenous languages by learning some basic vocabulary from each. The annual students versus staff soccer match on Thursday 20 July saw two very committed teams going head to head. Always an action-packed nail-biter, this year the students were victorious, scoring two goals. –Well done! For the Year 8 students, Languages Week will last one more day. On Monday 24 July, they will enjoy an Italian Immersion Day full of fun activities and vocabulary-building at the Mercy campus. Next week, our Senior Pathways Information Evening takes place on Tuesday 25 July. I hope to see many of our students and meet their parents at this important event for students in Years 9, 10, and 11. Finally, I hope everyone attending the first of our two Debutante Balls this weekend has a wonderful evening. It is sure to be a magical night. Greetings and welcome to Term 2 at St Joseph's College.
