Division: LRLS Law Reform & Legal Services Location: Parramatta, NSW, AU, 2150 Principal Solicitor, Legal Officer VI – Child Law Preservation and Reunification for Aboriginal children and young people Location – To be determined based on applicants (flexible working arrangements available) Employment type – Ongoing - Full Time (35 hours) Legal Officer Grade VI, Base Salary ($154,840 – $158,102), plus employer's contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading The Department of Communities and Justice acknowledges lived experience and how it contributes to the valuable work we do with the community.

Your role You will be a Principal Solicitor in the Child Law team in the Legal Branch of the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ).
Provide timely high-level litigation and legal advice, briefings, and correspondence on complex areas of law and policy issues to contribute to the efficient and effective delivery of legal services.
Provide supervision and guidance to legal staff to ensure delivery of quality professional legal services.
Provide an Aboriginal cultural lens to the work you do and the relationships you build.
What you'll do You will be part of the Child Law leadership team.
The Child Law practice group is responsible for a wide range of work relating to the care and protection of children including: Develop and review more complex and sensitive legal documents including legal precedents/records, correspondence, reports, submissions, briefing notes, deeds and contracts.
Contribute to the development, review and implementation of complex legislation and policies, practice standards and legal precedents.
Manage complex, contentious, or sensitive cases, reviews, research and other legal and administrative activities and provide advice on new and emerging issues in the relevant area of law and their longer-term implications for the Division and the Department.
Provide high level advice and recommendations and manage large projects involving legal reviews, law reform initiatives, legal standards and practices, strategies, reviewing systems, procedures and processes, including long-term planning to improve legal services and client/stakeholder outcomes.
Work collaboratively with legal staff internal and external to the Department and stakeholders to consult on proposed legislation, legislative changes and legislative interpretation and legal issues arising.
Conduct litigation before Courts and/or Tribunals as the Department's representative, and respond to formal and informal requests for information, including court subpoenas and applications under relevant legislation.
The Waruuguma Barrmarrany team that you will lead is a specialist team within the Child Law practice group for the preservation and reunification for Aboriginal children and young people and provides advice and advocacy in respect to day-to-day casework and broader DCJ strategy and policy involving Aboriginal children and young people.
What we're looking for Legal Qualifications and eligibility to hold a practising certificate as a Government legal practitioner issued by the NSW Law Society, with condition 2 removed.
Current and valid Working with Children Check Clearance in accordance with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012.
Where required hold a National Security Clearance at the appropriate level in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).
For the nature of the work within DCJ, it is fundamental that the candidate/s has a demonstrated strong understanding of Aboriginal people, lived experience, culture, communities, organisations, ways of working and history.
Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, communities, and employees in delivering results that value Aboriginal voice.
Experience working in a challenging and highly sensitive environment.
Ability to manage relationships with a diverse range of key stakeholders.
